IDF: Syria not planning for war with Israel in summer
By Amos Harel and Gideon Alon

The Israel Defense Forces has no intelligence regarding Syrian plans to initiate a war against Israel next summer, the army announced last night in an official statement.

This followed a day of contradictory statements regarding reports originating from Military Intelligence and the Northern Command.

IDF sources made it clear that assessments of the situation in the north are continuing, and preparations for a possible scenario involving the outbreak of war there next summer are part of a "working assumption" on the basis of which the forces' readiness can be improved.

The head of research at Military Intelligence, Brigadier General Yossi Beiditch, presented the government with a report on the situation along the northern border during the cabinet's weekly meeting.

Beiditch told the ministers that Syria's President Bashar Assad "is preparing the Syrian army for the possibility of a military confrontation with Israel, but on the other hand does not discount the possibility of a diplomatic settlement."

The head of research stressed that the Syrian leader has issued orders to expedite the production of long-range ballistic missiles and to move air-defense missiles closer to the border with Israel and the Golan Heights.

The senior intelligence officer added that from Assad's point of view, there is no contradiction in operating on both levels.

During the past two weeks, Assad has been involved in intensive diplomatic activities, Beiditch said, because he feels that a window of opportunity on the international level is available to Damascus, and he is trying to take advantage of this.

In meetings of the intelligence community in Israel in recent weeks, the view of most participants is that Assad is in no rush for war. They have also concluded that he is trying to find a way to move closer to the West and the United States - even if this drives a wedge between Syria and Iran.

The news that emerged from the cabinet meeting yesterday gave the impression that the army is expecting a war with Syria in the near future.

Senior military sources were quick to clarify that MI's head of research was addressing "trends," not specific events, and claimed that the grapevine exaggerated his statements.

Later yesterday, the IDF Spokesman announced that the army had no operational intelligence on aggressive intentions by the enemy, but added that "the IDF is conducting an orderly process of improving readiness and operational preparedness by the summer 2007."

Also yesterday, a senior officer of the Northern Command met with journalists and said that reports in recent weeks regarding the possibility of war with Syria are "irresponsible statements that are not based on intelligence."

The officer said that setting a target date is for internal army use, and is not based on solid intelligence information.

Describing the date as a point of departure, he added that the IDF was intensifying training with emphasis on the readiness of the Northern Command.

In addition to the training of reservist units, the IDF has also bolstered its forces in the north.

The officer said that on the Syrian side of the border there have also been movements of forces, particularly on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon. However, the IDF interprets the Syrian moves as defensive in nature.

However, Israeli sources say that Syria is continuing to permit the flow of arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon, in an effort to replenish the arsenal of the Shi'ite organization.

While there are no apparent preparations by Hezbollah to initiate a campaign against Israel in the near future, most of the focus is placed on the possibility that other elements may try to cause a conflagration in in the north.

Attention is given to the possibility that groups affiliated with Al-Qaida - global jihadists - will target United Nations peacekeepers, or that terrorists belonging to radical Palestinian organizations would try to attack along the border.

The situation along the border has changed radically since the days before the outbreak of war in July. In place of the Hezbollah forces are four brigades of Lebanon's armed forces, deployed south of the Litani River, and bolstered by more than 10,000 peacekeepers of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).

However, the IDF is concerned about the failure of the Lebanese army to prevent the rearmament of Hezbollah, especially the possible cooperation between Shi'ite soldiers in the Lebanese army and the radical Shi'ite group.

The IDF praised the work of the French and Spanish battalions in the United Nations force, noting that in some cases the European troops had destroyed Hezbollah bunkers and arms caches.

I see this as important news. It releases some of the DOOM for a while and lets it flow over to the SUN and/or earthquakes.

Good post Red. I think there will be a period of quiet, while alliances are strengthened - rearming takes place - and hezballah waits for the right political winds (to stir up more of their usual shit). Neither Syria or Iran have any interest in taking on Israel for the time being (because they can't win) - and politics demand that they occupy the high moral ground, at least in as much as propaganda will allow. The budding Iran - Russia alliance seems to be splitting the ME into 2 distinct camps - each with the ability to blow each other to smithereens. There could be a clash before these new realities are allowed to mature, or it could settle into a new middle eatern cold war - with US and Russian blocs - just like the old days..

Lebanon notwithstanding..

And perhaps that was the intent all along. I've read so much stuff lately that I can't put my finger on exactly what or where, but I'd read that there was some kind of background plan designed by TPTB which calls for the kind of split you mention, and perhaps a few more on top of that. When I read the article, it felt like it was straight out of Orwell's '1984'...

I don't know how Canada will fare, if that's the case. We already know the USA will be in the thick of it, as always. If the CFR gets the North American Union (thru the SPP), you might end up going along, too. LOL!

I was heartened to read this article today. I think ISAAC BROCK said something either last night or early in the day about nothing happening until after the sabbatical...and I think he said that happened in September.

SPP? what's that?
North American Union I have heard of. Is that something that people should be concerned about?

(obviously it is but i have been sort of BLOCKING OUT MAJOR NEWS MEDIA sometimes, because I am sick of lies and half truths...really break it down if you would...what is the "SPP" and how does it relate to the North American Union stuff?)

sounds like slavery...

Let me introduce you to the SPP...
It sounds benign until you start digging into the background. Then it is down-right anti-Constitutional.

Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America

The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) was launched in March of 2005 as a trilateral effort to increase security and enhance prosperity among the United States, Canada and Mexico through greater cooperation and information sharing.

This trilateral initiative is premised on our security and our economic prosperity being mutually reinforcing. The SPP recognizes that our three great nations are bound by a shared belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic institutions.

The SPP provides the framework to ensure that North America is the safest and best place to live and do business. It includes ambitious security and prosperity programs to keep our borders closed to terrorism yet open to trade.

The SPP builds upon, but is separate from, our long-standing trade and economic relationships. It energizes other aspects of our cooperative relations, such as the protection of our environment, our food supply, and our public health.

Looking forward, President Bush, Prime Minister Harper and President Fox have identified emergency management; influenza pandemics, including avian influenza; energy security; and safe and secure gateways (border security and facilitation) as key priorities for the SPP. The Leaders also announced the creation of North American Competitiveness Council to fully incorporate the private sector into the SPP process.

Looks pretty ordinary. However, this started out as a plan by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR); the idea was to create a tri-lateral group...an AMERICAN UNION if you will...that will compete with the European Union.

Here's the principle CFR document...its in .pdf. The study is far too long to copy and paste here (70 pps), so I'll just show their "conclusion."
"BUILDING A NORTH AMERICAN COMMUNITY"
Sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations
with the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the
Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales
[link to www.cfr.org]
CONCLUSION:
The global challenges faced by North America cannot be met solely through unilateral or bilateral efforts or existing patterns of cooperation. They require deepened cooperation based on the principle, affirmed in the March 2005 joint statement by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, that ‘‘our security and prosperity are mutually dependent and complementary.’’

Establishment by 2010 of a security and economic community for North America is an ambitious but achievable goal that is consistent with this principle and, more important, buttresses the goals and values of the citizens of North America, who share a desire for safe and secure societies, economic opportunity and prosperity, and strong democratic
institutions.

Okay, that still looks benign to the casual onlooker or the busy person (anyone not having the time to research it). But they add insult to injury because they intend to create a super-highway that runs from the southern Pacific coast of Mexico, up thru the USA (along Interstate Highway 35, and branching out on IH29 and IH94 [link to www.nascocorridor.com] ), and then on into Canada --- thus linking the three participants by road, rail, and pipeline. This will be a MEGA-highway. Huge. Massive.

NORTH AMERICA'S SUPER CORRIDOR COALTION, Inc.

That link spells it out. I advocate that people go from link to link within that website...it's quite the eye-opener. They refer to inland ports, and even name them in San Antonio, Kansas City, etc.

All of this started with NAFTA. It is basically a trade agreement that will destroy the sovereignty of the USA, Canada, and Mexico. It will do an end-run around our US Constitution. It will create a new currency called the "Amero" that will replace the currencies of the three participants. That one came from the guy who started it all...
