Humans are always ready to experience things that will weigh them down and make them gloomy. If only they wouldn’t go so far but could draw a few useful conclusions from the little they had lived! But no, they live their experiences to the full, and not just once but ten times, a hundred times! It never enters their head that they’ll have no energy left for the day they may wish to try spiritual experiences. Why not? The day may eventually come when, disgusted at having thrown themselves into swamps, they’ll decide to get to know purity and light. But it’ll be impossible; they will no longer have either the means or the strength for it. If they imagine anything is possible, that they can rise to heaven, having descended for years into hell, it’s because they know nothing about psychology or life. They have already failed, they are dirty, weighed down, listless – and they think they’re going to travel the length and breadth of heaven? What naivety; what ignorance!
