Warning for those in the Southern Hemisphere
Hi Guys,

Just a warning for all fellow Kiwis and aussies here in this forum.

My eldest child is a surfie, so she is out in the sun and surf for hrs at a time.... hrs. A very sunsmart kid.

Yesterday she went to surf with a friend.. and was only out in the afternoon sun (from 1pm) for 3 hrs, with sunscreen on.

Last night I was in A&E with her most of the night. She got so badly burnt that she has second degree burns all over the exposed parts of her body.. particularly on her thighs. It was so bad that the doc had to give her an injection of pethadine.

This on a day that was not even particularly hot.

I was totally shocked, so was she. As I said this kid is out in the surf and sun all the time.. although not for the past 4 weeks due to school finals.

She has a darker olive coloured skin like myself, which comes from Italian and irish heritage. Generally speaking my family does not get sun burnt at all, we just go darker brown. She is totally scarlet, like a boiled lobster... no kidding. I have never in all her life (18 yrs), seen her red at all, let alone as red as this.

Something is definately up with our sun. So take this as a warning to make sure that you guys use heaps and heaps of sunscreen if you are going to be out, and constantly reapply it.

It is not safe out there anymore.

What's more, the doc told me that he has seen several people like my babe in the past few days.

Be aware, and please be extra sunwise guys.

Cheers
Marianne

Wow!. I never expected a pinned thread.

My thanks to whomever was kind enough to do so, as this is so important for those of us living down here..smile_kiss

It is only early december and our hot months don't really start until late January (as a rule)....

So something is definately up, and with us being closer to the hole in the ozone layer our risks are substantially greater.

So thanks again.

Thanks heaps for your concern.

Her eyes are almost swollen shut. I have made her some electrolyte replacement formula, and the doc has her on steroids, anitinflammatories and regular analgesics..

She is sleeping at the moment, and I am heading that way myself in a few minutes to catch up on the lack thereof, last night. :(

Yep, I have been listening to the UV warnings up to 14.....extreme to say the least. You bet there is more going on. Use this site in late afternoon/evening then click on "Lightning" and "rainfall". You will notice that the atmosphere is highly charged. It will shock you. No rain though. Our bushfires are started by lightning and will get worse. Then check the cloud cover against the radar return. Click "radar". Some cloud does not show up on radar but when you get these anomalous returns with no cloud to show for it then there has to be something up unless some expert can tell me otherwise.

That is always a possibility, however I am sure it is the sun as I feel it burn on my skin immediately it is exposed.

Re: Warning for those in the Southern Hemisphere
I'm in Southern California and by this time [mid-December] I should not burn at all. I usually tan quite easily and never burn but I developed a nasty burn--hurt to the touch-- on my left arm because I stuck it out the window when I was driving.

It was exposed for no more than approx. 30 minutes when this developed.

This NEVER happens in Dec!!!!

Weird indeed!

Hello people get burnt like this all the time blistering/to over exposure. If you have been downunder you would know that you get burnt more on cloudy days. It seems the uv a magnified from the clouds.

Hello Marianne!!!

Long time eh?

It's good to see you still around these parts.
I'm so sorry to here of your girls horrific sounding sunburn, as you may be aware I have stated here on this forum that the Sun is not right.
You may recall my "The Sun Is White" thread?

Well it seems I and many others were not wrong when we said that a few years ago now.

I wish your girl a speedy recovery and wish you and all a very Happy Christmas.

God Bless.

John.

Hi Marianne. Very sorry about your daughter. Hope she is OK. Looks as if we'll all be burned by flames, before the sun gets us, judging by the fires raging over Australia. Getting worse in Victoria and Tassie. So early in the season too. God help us all. rose

Re: Warning for those in the Southern Hemisphere
I moved to the desert southwest of the US 18 months ago. So I admit I simply may not be used to the sunshine we receive here year round, as well as the more southerly latitude from where I used to live (northeast US)... but as an avid golfer, I cannot believe that on the shortest days of the year around the winter solstice, when the sun is, of course, at its lowest angle in the sky - theoretically the time when it is least likely to receive the kind of exposure that will give me a sunburn - how red my skin gets if I forget to apply sunblock. I have often thought that this is odd, that even in mid-winter I need to apply sunscreen if I'm outdoors... but it is definitely true.

Just a thought, because I didn't see it mentioned in my quick scan of the thread, but there are medications such as some antibiotics which will increase a person's sensitivity to the sun. I'm sure the OP's doctor would have asked the question as well, and it would have been mentioned, but perhaps this is a possibility? Still... like I say, I have noticed the strength of the sun too.

The sun is in min/max. We just had (still having I think) a large radiation burst not too long ago that's hitting us.

Re: Warning for those in the Southern Hemisphere
I am glad the OP made the point that her child does use sunscreen and is careful. The worst time to be out in the sun is between 2pm and 3pm or with daylight saving add an hour, which is a bastard when your fair skinned children want to play outside after school, I loathe daylight saving. Sunscreen cannot protect anybody for 3 hrs at the worst time of day regardless of how olive their skin is, you can do a lot of damage without appearing to be burnt. The sun definitely has a bite to it the last few years that it didn't have before, you can actually feel it burning your skin some days. Make your child wear a UV 30+ rashy shirt as they will still get burnt through a normal t-shirt if they are swimming for too long and knee length boardies are a great idea for girls as well.

Thanks for the headsup on how bad the sun is this summer.

Re: Warning for those in the Southern Hemisphere
Thanks for the post Marianne.

I hope your daughter makes a speedy recovery. Sunburn such as you've described is indeed a rarity especially given that she had applied sunscreen prior to going out for what was, essentially, a short time.

I must say that for a few years now I just cannot go out on a sunny day without my UV protection sunglasses. I don't have much of a problem with sunburn these days because I no longer care to have the super-tanned body of yesteryears' summers, but my eyes are now extremely sensitive to sunlight and that is something that had never bothered me in the past.

The depletion in the ozone layer over our part of the world must have something to do with this, but we'll be waiting a long time before our respective governments do something to help reverse this very worrying environmental development.

Again .... best wishes to your daughter, Marianne, and thanks for the heads up. rose

You'll need to keep her out of the sun for at least as long as she's on steroids, and probably a while afterwards. I was on methylprednisolone for months and my skin went through some dramatic changes. It burns in the sun, it even burns when I'm around two feet away from the stove. This never happened before.

About suncreens, they're really not all they're cut out to be.
