Linux fanatics are generally software developers who are required to use it for their work. Try reloading the version of Windows that came with your PC. If you really must go with Linux, Debian derivatives are currently the most popular. Zorin is probably the closest to a MS desktop and the one I would try next. Mint seems popular. Ubuntu probably the best funded. Linux is a fantastic server O/S but the desktop suffers terrible bloat-ware. the same bloat |

You build from source and install the OS YOU WANT. Don't want a bloated system, than don't build it. Gentoo will also teach you how the system is put together in case any problems arise. Mint/Ubuntu are loaded with bloat ware. FreeBSD is another option, just install the bases system user land and then build the system YOU WANT from source. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72216176 If you are prepared to invest in hours of learning, all Linux distro's can be custom installed, though different packages have dependencies. Your reasoning is exactly why most people never stick with Linux. It either requires way too much time and effort or you get stuck with some horrible cobbled together amateurish, back to front ever changing mess. Over recent years Microsoft has done everything possible to drive away it's customers with their crap ideas, Linux does the same. I would really love to find a Linux distribution that appears polished, but for the average desktop user they are ALL absolute turds. Windows 2000 / 2003 / XP is probably as good as it gets for a basic functional O/S. |
