question about the winter solstice
the winter solstice is when the sun is at its lowest point above the horizon. why is this considered the beginning of winter instead of mid-winter? shouldn't the coldest part of the year be for an equal period just before and just after the winter solstice?

the same would apply for the summer solstice. shouldn't that really be mid-summer instead of the beginning of summer?

Re: question about the winter solstice
When is winter the coldest...late Jan/early Feb, right ?

When is summer the hotest... late July, early August ?

Has to do with heat stored.

Also more convenient a time-marker... tradition.
