Official Thread: Gardening questions answered here. | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 70286750 United States 05/12/2016 01:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm a gardening addict. Quoting: Off Grid Lady I have dreams at night about gardening, and it's normal to have trouble getting to sleep this time of year since I can't stop thinking about my gardening projects. I studied permaculture, and it's my passion. Unfortunately, I decided to take this season off to shop farmers markets instead while I continue recovering from a surgery that really slowed me down. That's why I've been online more, and figured I'd spend this time talking gardens and helping others. Tis the season!!! Using google will turn up lots of bad advice that can cost you. Been there, and over the years learned what REALLY works to grow food (and purdy flowers) organically with minimal purchasing of stuff that doesn't work or isn't needed. Other gardeners are encouraged to chime in and help too!!! Drop your questions here I have voles real bad, how do you kill them ? One problem with poisoning them is that you'll have poison brewing underground with it going into your veggies. I'd use closely knit chicken wire or any kind of wire mesh buried around anything I plant so they'd be unable to reach it and move out of the area. If you're just starting this garden area, be sure to dig up and till it really well to fuck up their pre-existing tunnels that lead to it. Seriously though, use some wire mesh fencing matierial buried a few feet deep, as a barrier around your entire garden, and they simply won't be able to reach it. not even remotely possible - do you yourself do this? This is a joke right? |

I will take my chances with the voles - as for cats, they will catch one here or there but that won't get rid of them. |

Go with the mesh netting I mentioned. It will stop them instantly without introducing poison into your ecosystem. Or ultrasonic vibrating repelling devices. Also, rat terriers will dig pretty deep and quick to catch a varmint. Sound devices are futile - I have two in the ground now |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50778764 but how do I keep the deer from eating all of my garden? Fencing, dude. It's super cheap. Deer fencing is about nine feet tall, but cheap plastic stuff works. So you suggest at least 9 feet tall? Yikes. If you go back in the thread, I went into some detail about ways to help repel them. The only SURE way is a fence. Super strongly scented soap, grated and spread around can help repel them. |

I PROMISE it will work WAY better than poison. Putting out poison costs about $5 and takes about 5 minutes. Digging a trench 3 foot deep and installing wire netting around the perimeter of the garden is not feasible and I would probably not even work. |

Super cheap and actually works. Ends up being more effective and cheaper than repellant methods. |

Drunkenkungfu User ID: 71622969 Australia 05/12/2016 01:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Off Grid Lady It truly is interesting to read all these issues people are having in the northern hemisphere. I am all so starting to really understand why it is so important to learn the correct terminology with in the world of Flora and fauna, You could could do some info posts on things like why there is a 2 name, naming system, why Latin is used in the binomial naming system, could do one on importance of PH and soil types, even what is the makeup of soil, and the insect and weed identifying keys and how to use them, This post looks like she will be a long one should pack it with info. 11:11 |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 70286750 United States 05/12/2016 01:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 5 stars, I am an addict also. I love the back to Eden method, with the addition of rock dust to remineralize and compost tea. First year for the dust and tea, so lets see how it goes. The mulch is the best thing yet, I use the natural mostly but for my front yard I did use the colored on top in small areas for decoration. I am trying to make my front yard pretty with edibles, so far so good. Quoting: crazycloud Best addiction you can ever have. Not sure if I know the "eden method", but swear by azomite rock dust for the first season or two in any plot. I used to collect little pine cones for decorative mulch. It's cute! |

You know, one of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years: we always look for a quick fix and end up battling the problem forever. In my experience, putting forth the extra effort to install a real barrier like mesh netting ends up being a permanant solution and it totally worth it. Deer are the best example. You can exhaust yourself with every method of repelling them, but just putting up the netting solves the problem instantly. My answer posted weird here, but oh well. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 71657157 United States 05/12/2016 01:36 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a HUGE tip buried way back in this thread that some may have missed: Something important to know about "weeds" Usually what makes them so strong is the fact that their roots go deeper than most plants. That's why you pull it and they just keep coming up and spreading. Realize this: with those deep roots, they pull up nutrients deep underground that other plants will never reach. By plucking the weed before it produces seed, then laying it right there on top of the soil, you are delivering those hard to reach nutrients to your food crop!!!!! |
