Re: Justice Department program to no longer use ‘disparaging’ terms ‘felons’ and ‘convicts’
The Justice Department’s Office of Justice Programs is eschewing the terms “felon” and “convict” when officials refer to individuals convicted of crimes, opting instead for less “disparaging labels,” Assistant Attorney General Karol Mason announced last week.

The Office of Justice Programs plans to substitute terminology such as “person who committed a crime” and “individual who was incarcerated” in speeches and other communications as part of an effort to remove barriers that officials say hinder progress of those who re-enter society after completing their prison sentences.

“I have come to believe that we have a responsibility to reduce not only the physical but also the psychological barriers to reintegration,” Ms. Mason wrote Wednesday in a guest post for The Washington Post. “The labels we affix to those who have served time can drain their sense of self-worth and perpetuate a cycle of crime, the very thing reentry programs are designed to prevent.”

The announcement follows a series of initiatives introduced as part of the Justice Department’s first National Reentry Week, through which law enforcement officials hope to reduce recidivism by changing features of the criminal justice system.

n 2013 Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter signed an executive order that required city employees to use the term “returning citizen” when referring to a person who has been released from jail or prison.

I'm sorry to intrude but you don't seem to understand the meaning of "forgiveness". It's unconditional. As a "Christian", you should practice it. ESPECIALLY when you feel less tolerant.
I speak from experience. I am a convicted felon. 25 yrs ago, I stole a reliant K at a party and drove to Daytona Beach. They gave me probation, I violated it by moving without permission. They gave me house arrest, I violated that too. I was pretty determined to not give a shit at 21 yrs of age. Served 6 ms in state prison. Anyhoo... I grew into a completely different person after that. learned my lesson, worked, paid taxes..etc.
Never committed another crime in my life outside of a speeding ticket and a red light ticket.
People do not forgive me. Nobody gives a shit that I was a kid. They see I have a record and they distance themselves from me. I've even had people I was dating do a background check and discounted me for that reason.
I certainly don't want to see younger people penalized their entire lives for making one or two bad choices. If someone can prove they are fit for society for a number of yrs, they should be forgiven. Nobody should be allowed to exclude them.

Your situation really has nothing to do with what the Obama Administration is attempting to do..

Yes of course I believe in forgiveness, what I do not believe in is lawlessness from the Obama Administration...

Hold on, you people in this thread actually think not verbally degrading a person every day of their life on top of everything else is a healthy experience?, sure health may not be one of the most talked about issues in prison but if you want to successfully reintegrate somebody(rather than give up hope0 you need to keep your inmates healthy and educated.

Learn about the Stanford prison project, repetitive action and thoughts leeds to lifestyle and behavioural changes.

PULLMAN – Three Washington State University instructors are being accused of violating students’ First Amendment rights by banning terms like “illegal alien,” “male” and “female” in the classroom.

...
ritics took issue with Selena Lester Breikss’ policy attempting to bar students from using terms such as “The Man,” “colored people,” “illegals,” “illegal aliens” and “tranny.” Breikss, who teaches the 300-level course Women and Popular Culture, also tried banning the use of “male” and “female” to describe men and women, according to the syllabus on her course website.

Why are people so sookie about language?
When the hell did people get so soft inside?
I thought it was the hard consequences of crime that made most people think twice about doing anything illegal.

All I can see is this softening of the language also softening the reasoning of committing crime to begin with.

That's why this is going to be fun to watch play out.

UK police understandably had many different and colourful terms and slang names for people of the criminal fraternity. About 10 years ago these became unacceptable as the police were forced into political correctness.
