I guess for younger people that is an era that fades farther away all the time. |

"For years, she has eaten the same thing every day, not much vegetables or fruit. But she's gotten this far." Well damn. |

I have often thought that when I was a kid growing up in the 1960s, I was surrounded by older people who were born in the 19th century. Certainly they were raised by parents who were straight up Victorians. It was always my view that we were much closer to the 19th century than we thought. Quoting: Vision Thing Well I think I am still quite close to the 19th century, love to read the literature from that time and read about what life was like then. I guess for younger people that is an era that fades farther away all the time. Same here, my great grandmother was a Victorian lady who met my great grandfather at the Chicago world's fair. My grandmother seemed like a very Victorian lady, and I sang in a barbershop quartet music club, in which most of the members were born in the 1880s. I loved to hear their stories and it blew my mind that they lived in a time before cars, planes, electricity, and telephones. And they lived to see all those things invented. To them, the barbershop music was simply the music of their youth. The past seemed very close, and when I was a child, I read Dickens, Mark Twain, and other Victorian era books. I've always been somewhat Victorian myself. I can't imagine how much has been lost since most children these days have little or no exposure to old people, and they don't read classic novels. Harry Potter is shallow and ignorant of the past. |
