And what happened 12 years ago? 2004? Bad year for quakes.

This is wrong. Taiwan had a 6.4 on 5/12 and USGS did not report it (or they wiped it from their data).
 Quoting: CuriousSeeker

On may 12th Taiwan had 5.8 and a 5.6 quakes off its NE Shore.

Latitude 24.66 N
Longitude 121.94 E

Magnitude Mw 5.8"

Nothing over 5.8 recently.

Here is my thread with sources. This is wrong. There was also a 6.4:

Your source is from a Japanese Seismic Recorder.

Now. If the Japanese had much of a background in Earthquakes we should have a tendency to go with their reporting.

After these long periods of weak activity, is there then any history of increased larger magnitude activity?

So we had a close to 6 tonight

M 5.9 - 92km E of Ile Hunter, New Caledonia

when i see a .9 it reminds me the products in the super market that cost 5.99$ instead of 6$
There, they do it to attract customers, here to alter the statistics?

This is the same quake as reported by two other agencies:

EMSC: 2016-05-12 03:17:16.4 24.66 N 121.94 E 10 5.8 TAIWAN

USGS: 2016-05-12T03:17:16.250Z,24.6744,121.9662,10,>>>>>>5.6<<<<<<,mb,,31,0.52,1.19,us,us10005gpt,2016-05-12T14:47:27.000Z,"14km NE of Su'ao, Taiwan",earthquake,2.5,1.2,0.038,242,reviewed,us,us

12PM JST is 3AM UTC

Anyone have other recording agencies?

Thank you OP for the additional info! So it looks like USGS did indeed downgrade that quake.

Ugh. I am fed up with USGS downgrades.

Not sure. You found an anomaly that warrants further investigation. So I will dig and you should too.

I have not been able to find a map of JMA seismographs not on the mainland, but the GSN has an affiliated reporting station 36 miles from the disputed quake:

Re: Longest period without a 6.0 or greater quake in 12 years [per USGS data]
Ok. I think I found the issue. JMA uses a different formula than the traditional Richter to calculate magnitude (and I’m not talking about the Shindo scale that is used to measure seismic intensity).

The JMA magnitude measurement is referred to as the Mjma and the formulaic difference can be seen if you search for Richter vs Mjma. I think I got banned for trying to link to the google books excerpt.

To further complicate matters, the JMA also uses a separate magnitude calculation for regional quakes < 600km from the mainland that is referred to as the Mwp:

[link to www.data.jma.go.jp]

So it seems to not be an apples to apples comparison and the curious statistical aberration that is the focus of the thread continues…

We have now eclipsed and are extending the 25yr USGS record for consecutive days without a 6.0 or greater earthquake.
