US slaps 522% import tax on Steel

Imagine you setup a mill pressing cold steel sheets and you start buying all the scrap that normally goes to China. There are investment groups already ramping these ops up and the second the law changed.

Thats how efficient our system is. Strike where the iron is hot.

China has been sending bullshit products to the United States for sometime. There was ban on rebar because the product was so bad that it couldn't be used. They were dumping it in our country at such a low cost that American makers couldn't compete.

Tariffs have a double beneficial effect.

They help pay for the operation of our government. And they protect Americna businesses and jobs.

The fucknozzles that decided tariffs are bad should all be led out and shot.

That's not balls, and it's not the US.
That's Obama trying to kill industry in America before he is dragged out of office.

The steel we import from China is of very low quality.

I was in the shop of a Logging company where some of this imported steel was being cut, and suddenly I started hearing this "pop...pop...pop"...

It turns out there were visible ball bearings in the 3/4" thick plate steel which had not been properly fused during the smelting process and were causing the popping.

Seriously... the fabricator and I could hardly believe what we were seeing.

I have a wood stove nearly 40 years old, built by a neighbor from scrap American steel used to manufacture equipment.

I still use that stove today.

So, I welcome come protectionism on our part when it comes to revitalizing our steel industry.

It would be nice if our textile industry was next.
I doubt we could come up with enough American made clothe to furnish uniforms for our army if we went to war with China!

I work in the steel industry (hot rolled) and since 2013 the imports have been killing us. China has so much capacity it's ridiculous. If we ever think we are going to win a war against them we have to avoid losing our US mills.

Whenot we have another WW we better have capacity to build ships, guns, tanks, etc... and over the past 10 years mills have closed. Nucor Steel is a great example of an amazing American steel company. I have a company that does maintenance work for every steel mill in the country. I see this shit everyday.

Our politicians have choked out this industry with dumb environmental and import legislation.

The mills still up and running will get more work and add workers, and when Trump turns the economy back around and reigns in the EPA you will see new mills being built.

I use cold rolled steel all the time and only buy USA produced steel. The Chinese steel is cheap and also sub-standard.

You're right about that. 522% is absurd. There will be a steel shortage and that will trickle down to many industries. We don't have enough mills up and running to keep up with demand.

However, it's perfect timing for President Trump to starting rebuilding this economy and getting back on track.

I have faith in American industry and it's ability to rebuild quickly. But it takes throwing the blood sucking politicians, who are selling us out at every turn, out on their asses.

True this will not have any impact on rebar, HR rounds, beams etc. Steel prices are already heading up at an alarming rate. We have seen two price increases from Nucor this month, and that is not for cold rolled, I'm talking HR.

The fact is tariffs are too late in the game. Maybe 10 to 20 years ago it would work. When we had the ore they needed. Now they have it and don't need us.

Tariffs only work if the other country has to sell you product. China can sit on it as long as they want they sell enough plastic to us.

I don’t even know if the US makes any commodity steels anymore. It's a joke to put a tariff on a product that we don't make anymore.

Now if you want to promise an even playing field and give industry a 5 years minimum to actually set up to make mass production commodities steel, that’s another thing all together.

Still, I do not know if the US has the ability to turn out the components that make mass production steel plant machinery, probably not. I watched all those massive crown jewels, those gigantic steel making tools and much else shipped out to China 20 years ago.

All industry from the great lakes to the Ohio valley was shipped out like spoils of war and sent to China.

All of US Steel, Bethlehem etc machinery is setup in China.
