How do I break into the world of video editing?
I don't have a powerful PC or the inclination to buy the software for 500 dollars

Get a trial version or sign up for the adobe stuff where you can pay monthly. Get a book on Premiere or watch youtubes before you do that and then you can get a demo reel together. Before even that, record tons of footage of all different types to tell a story. Quality doesn't matter so you can even use your phone if you don't have a vidcam/slr. Make it your full time 16 hour/day job using premiere for as long as you can afford to pay the monthly. After a couple of months of that, you will be competent and could have some footage to show if the audio is good and the camera not too shaky.

As for the business end of it, do free editing first for people (weddings and such). Once you have a good set of demos available, paying work will come in.

Agree. Why not starting from less expensive and simple software ? Like [link to www.viosk.com (secure)] for example ? Not everyone started their video editing career with 500 $ tools, I know this for sure.

Hire some Indians or Chinese to do it for cheap, its a really boring passtime.
The end result as a director though is great as long as you don't have to do the menial work.

You can get the software for free that is not the problem.
Its just with the best software video editing is boring.
Although your idea for a video might be great, getting it to that point is a menial task.

YOu can run free software on even the most shit computers.

Video pad Is a good one. So is VSDC free video editor.

I ran those on a proper proper proper shit pc, with no real issues.

If you have a 64 bit PC however, you can easily run Sony Vegas 12 which is really really good and super intuitive.

Its not a cheap program, but its possible to download cracked pirated versions if you are so inclined. But to be honest, there is a lot you can do with the two free ones I mentioned earlier.

Camtaisia is also supposed to be good, but have not personally used it.

Number one bit of advice would be to get a youtube channel ansd start putting out content. Thats the real thing. Just make videos.5a

Re: How do I break into the world of video editing?
p.s Video Pad is the easiest of the two free ones I recommended, but i found i could do a little more with VSDC however it can be a right pain to use as almsot everything is counter intuitive so you have to watch a lot of instruction videos on youtube.
WHen i had a really shit pc and could only use these programs, i used to do some effects in one program, then exprt it to the other to do other effects.
Had some issues in VSDC for instence with audio - very furstrating

THe best program i have used is Sony Vegas. Its like they have set it up to do almost everything you would normally want to do in an easy way.

YOu could literally learn it enough in a day to put out a pretty good youtube video.

BUt yeah - its not free, thats the only problem
