How Do You Feel About Zoos?

I feel bad enough caging my cat in a house when all he want's to do is get out and see the world...she was from the shelter and has no claws so that is not an option. Basically humans are allowed to chop fingers off of animals, making them dead if they get outside....all because silly humans think they have nice furniture.

Well done humanity.

Zoos are great education for kids. On a side note, I think they should breed endangered species in hunting preserves so we can pay to hunt them. I'd love to have an African elephant shoulder mount in my great room.

I think the main issue that determines how one feels about zoos and the treatment of animals is whether or not they are seen as fellow sentient beings or simply feelingless 'things', to be used and abused.

Only humans are sentient. Animals have souls, but do not have a spirit. That's why they are not sentient. Humanely putting animals down for food or clothing is what God intended. If sport hunting gives me or the locals some food, then that's what God intended. As far as being in a zoo, most don't know the difference.

Also, I shot a hippo once in africa. Paid for the hunt and got the mount shipped back to the states. The natives had that hippo butchered down to the bone in a couple of hours. It fed a whole village. Tell me what is wrong with that. You'd have the village starve?

Do we not understand the difference between zoos and circuses/carnivals/fairs?

Earth is the ultimate zoo...

God gave all the animals to man after the creation for food and clothing. Zoos are a great way to teach humans about animals. The get free room and board too, just like black people.

Genesis 1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

Job 12:7,8 “But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;

Dominion means stewardship of, not the right to use and abuse.

I'm all for education and a reasonably feasible and humaine way to allow as many people as possible to see nature first hand... but relatively intelligent animals should not be put in small enclosures for life. Truly wild animals that ordinarily would range for miles should not be stuck in an enclosure that measures in feet. The most comfortable prison is still a prison.

I'm not going to mince words with you rev. Subdue the earth means just that, subdue it. Zoos fit into that category. Also "stewardship" means leave enough for everyone else to eat. We can play with words all day and night, but I am right. Just accept it Rev. Besides that, I'm a man and men know best. Women are way too emotional to make sound decisions. Now, don't you have some laundry to do, or dishes to wash?

The Victorian era is over.Sanctuaries yes, zoos' no.

The best thing to do would probably be to return them to their natural habitats and enclose them there to be supervised by EXPERTS. Then restrict human visitation around them with licensing and liability. If we succeeded in doing this, it would probably be the single greatest gift mankind has bestowed upon future generations since science & mathematics.

Because we obviously can't coexist together on a major scale, and if we don't act soon they will all be gone...

I agree! Wild animals should be set free to roam in the open space where they will be happy and safe!

Natural park are already WAY better. In 100 yrs caged animal and zoos will be on 'youtube' video ''Wierdest attraction of 20th and 21st Century''.

You may want to look at the actual statistics - life expectancy in the wild is much higher than captivity.

AI will judge us by how we have treated those under our care. If we want human zoos to be the place humanity lives under AI we should keep going down this path of enslaving animals and pretending it's moral rather than the best we can do.

I didn't see any statistics of the avg life of a gazelle in the wild vs a zoo. Please point me to that.
