My GLP Practical Quick Guide to Obamacare- You So Frakking Can!
Before I get started some of you might want to check out Sean Parnell's Self Pay Patient Site

Disclaimer to very angry people screwed by the government and/or ACA, haters on principle, fellow conspiracy theorists, doomed, dot gov stuck with no choice to read these threaders, FEMA camp evaders, and our beloved garden variety trolls:

I hate Obamacare. For many reasons. However, I believe we have an obligation in these crazy times to be a bit err "flexible". Not as in BattleStar Galactica New Caprica Human Police flexible, but careful and pragmatic. And believe me, I am a direct descendant of Revelutionary War heroes buried several hundred yards from the family home: those people were practical, shrewd and knew their opposition in side and out. Having directly read their journals, I think they would give the below a thumbs up.

Even if you still want to vomit, read it anyway because I have direct experience listening to healthcare.gov and big health insurer bickering over me on a conference call. More on that later.

So here's my advice on gubernatorial subsidized ACA.

Obamacare.

I know. Everybody HATES it. I get that. However I think many GLPers are resilient, cynical, and "flexible" when it comes to survival, and meeting their needs.

Here's my ACA result: $93 a month. (Single, no kids). NO deductibles, No out of pocket. Copay for specialists is $10. My primary doc Zero. ER visit $50. Prescriptions: zero deductible, $3 copay.

BTW, No Referrals. I can just simply go.

Hospital stays zero deductible then 5%.

Here's how ridiculous it can get. If I go Full Glutton and gain 100lbs, I can have it cut all out and have bariatric surgery for pennies on the dollar.

Blue Cross Blue Shield silver plan, PPO.

Doctors aren't graduates of Bumphuk Guadalajara School of Med, they are just like the ones you'd typically get.

PSST if your doctor graduated from a non USA medical school, that means they couldn't get INTO a US medical school.

Yes I am a business owner. I don't do bad at all. Prior to the ACA, my monthly premium was almost $400 a month with a $5000 deductible. Not to mention, the insurance companies and I weren't exactly amicable. They would deny very basic claims, nickel and dime me, try to cancel, but I buried them in their own paperwork and they usually conceded.

So HTF does one go from that to holeeee crap great insurance?

1. The ACA has an Income "sweet spot". If you can make yourself legally fit into the sweet spot, the ACA Smiles upon you.

a. How I do it, legally. You have to plan because you want the sweetspot, but never Medicaid (more on that below). First put your taxes cap on: (it's like converting Celsius to Fahrenheit, few understand, you just apply the formula and get the result. Don't overthink, that's the next step). The ACA looks at MAGI to figure out if you qualify. thats Modified Adjusted Gross Income.

That is NOT the same thing as adjusted income on your taxes because under the ACA (stay with me) it's Gross Income Minus what are essentially "above the line" deductions. Basically, most typical standard or itemized deductions do NOT get counted for ACA purposes.

If you work for someone else. Boooo.

If you have your own business. Maybe yay. It depends.

Ok, so MAGI Takes many trade and business deductions off the top. Basically anything you can legally shave off BEFORE you start figuring your itemized deductions are fair game.

Your main job is to hire a reputable CPA that is a tax Designer AND prepared. There are various ways you can legally shelter your income for purposes of qualifying for the ACA, yet live life. You will need an LLC or Corp to do this. Do NOT be overly aggressive or u raise a flag. Find a COA that takes the Goldilocks approach: Just Right.

Visit and have the CPA explain how to do this. You get above the line deductions to your income that you CANT get as a typical Josephine working. But if you are a consultant, 1099ed self employed, yes you can.

Now, here's the scary part. If you have a problem with your insurer. Healthcare dot gov is the voice of Zeus. I had a payment issued caused by my insurer, not me. Partially caused by their non English speaking front line reps. I easily got dot gov on a conference call with the insurer billing department. Dot gov cracked heads over there.

Then dot gov told me it would take 45 days to sort it out. I responded by then the insurer will have cancelled me due to not paying, even though they have my payments.

"Don't worry about it."

Next morning, same people, but the insurer was sulky and clearly well spanked. They credited me the way they were supposed to in the first place and immediately fixed everything. That day.

This is not praise. I'm happy, but it shows a worrisome issue, kind of.

For now dot gov rules the throne of healthcare. They can court jester you, they can make you part of the Royal Ball, or they can hang you in less than a few days.

But I digress. Please look into this and think about it.

At that price are you being subsidized?

What we are seeing is people who can afford an office visit, but not a test or procedure. Also, hit with unexpected bills for anything unexpectedly "out of network," (e.g. maybe your specialist is in network, maybe the anesthesiologist is not)

People canceling needed tests, etc.
