Strange noises and light in the woods

I was just standing out in the yard of this house which is in a small community in the wooded mountains. There are houses nearby within sight. In the wooded area below the slope I heard a strange whooping noise kind of like a huge bird flapping its wings. I would hear a Woosh sound followed by a foot stamping like sound in the leaves. This noise occurred 5 or 6 times. Almost like if a huge bird landed and then flapped its wings and levitated then landed a few seconds later. Whoosh stamp but with a few seconds in between. Seems like it was moving in a circular path. Then I saw a red light flash for second, a small red light.the light was close to me maybe 40 feet away. Then I ran into the house and shut the sliding door behind me as I ran. Sat in my room. Went back out to the kitchen a while later and the slider was open. I don't know if it opened because of how hard I shut it or if something opened it. What was it?
