I read an article a few days ago that reported on the Vancouver affordability problem. According to that article, last year the wealth created by working people in Vancouver was 19 billion dollars. The wealth created by people flipping real estate and rising real estate prices was 25 billion. Most of that speculation is from offshore Chinese investors. Something is seriously fucked up when foreign investors generate more wealth by doing nothing than the entire local population working their asses off. The average price of a single detached home in Vancouver is 1.2 million dollars. Nobody that actually lives and works here can afford to buy. There are entire blocks of older affordable rentals being bulldozed to build more tacky towers of condos that nobody here can afford to live in. Up to 45% of all condos are either unoccupied or rented via Air B&B. You can't even rent a place because availability is near zero, and even if you find a place, you are competing with hundreds of other people. Renters are actually bidding the rents up to land a place to live. I know lots of people that pay 65% of their income on rent, and we aren't talking nice places either. Chinese investors are also buying resources like gas, mines, ports, commercial and industrial complexes. They expect fast and spectacular returns and a lot of the big money is ill gotten or connected to the government. And the government has allowed it and won't do anything to stop it.

I know that this is happening in US cities too, but in Vancouver it has reached a critical point. All 3 levels of government are dragging their feet because even though things are bad, if they pull the rug out from under the Chinese investors, the economy will crash. It's the only thing that makes it look on paper like we aren't broke.
