Rules:

1. No smoking on company property
2. No cell phones on company property
3. No tats

What you do off of company property is not my interest, on company property strict rules.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68940709

No tats, or no VISIBLE tats?
 Quoting: ThereRMeds4That

Pretty much the same. If I am in a restaurant and the server has visible tats, I request a different server. This has happened so much, that the restaurant got rid of the tatted servers and cooks. Wonderful place to eat now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68940709

It impacts how people view you and how you are treated. Tats are a real problem in our society. One girl at our store has neck tattoos. She will wear a choker, but it was a real mistake for her to get them. She looks really rough. She was a pretty girl before she did that to herself. I'm glad they have employed her because she probably has a hard time getting hired anywhere because her tats are so disruptive. We aren't allowed to die our hair funny colors or have haircuts that are distracting to the customers either. Those are also things that employers have to make decisions about.

Some people are holding on to their habit with a death grip. I quit 4 years ago. I am glad I did.
 Quoting: BunBun

I quit 14 years ago but enjoy an occasional cigar. Does that make me a smoker? Technically yes. Does it make me a problem to my employer? No.
 Quoting: shortcord

I think you are probably not doing it on company time or on the company grounds, so no, I don't think that's a problem.

Re: If you were an employer, would you hire smokers? Why or why not?
I used to smoke, I don't smoke anymore. I am an employer-and I do hire people who smoke. At the end of the day, I'm not here to tell people what they can and can't do in regard to their own health; however, I do expect them to do The work that they are assigned. They do get the ability to smoke on their breaks, but it cannot be done on the property ground. In most cases, it's not thier smoking habit that gets an employee and hot water-it usually has to do with a bad attitude.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68622920

Well, I agree, it's going to be a bad attitude issue, of course. I just notice that the smokers really tend to take more breaks than they are supposed to and are gone for longer than the 15 minutes we are allotted for breaks.
 Quoting: BunBun

You do make a valid point when it comes to taking breaks. However, as an employer, I also have to be able to manage my teams properly. I've worked really hard to improve my overall communication skills; I offer great incentives for hard workers; and I also pride myself on creating a motivational atmosphere. Rather a person is a smoker are not, if they're not happy with where they are in life, or where they work, thier productivity rate will reflect accordingly. My employees are treated really well, and I have never had a problem with one of them taking advantage of the perks that I offer. I would assume that, in the rare chance there was a problem, it would involve something more then the work atmosphere that I provide. I will cross that bridge when I get there.

I own a floor contracting biz and refuse to hire smokers. Clients hate the smell and get upset when an employee lights up near the property. Vape is a ok and weed off the clock is no problem.

I don't smoke anymore as I have been quit for 8 years but I don't have an issue with smokers. In a free country you should have the option to use products if they are legal and don't impair your ability to do your job.

However, I will say that there should be a designated area away from any customers and other employees who don't want to be around it. It should also be on assigned breaks and not heading back in when the break bell rings but back at your work area ready to work when the break is over. Anything is really just time clock theft.

Anyone else notice the increase in obesity matching the decline in smoking? How about the increase in drug use?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69481369

Good observation.
I am certain there is a direct correlation.
No need for blue ribbon panel studies costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to prove.

Re: If you were an employer, would you hire smokers? Why or why not?
I owned a tech company and had some smokers. They would disappear for 30 minutes or so for smoke breaks. Like every other hour. So they got in a whole 6 hour work day and getting paid for 8 hours.

fired them
 Quoting: TheToolMan

This is exactly what happens. Especially if their duties require them to travel and be out of the office most of the time. I used to have 10+ employees that were on the road 5 days a week. The smokers were 70% as productive as the non-smokers because of all the smoke breaks. These guys would all take 1.5 hour lunch breaks as well, because they'd have to smoke before and after. Plus, our customers would call and complain that our employees were smoking on their property. Then they started smoking in the company vehicles.

I will never hire another smoker...period. They work 5-6 hours of an 8 hour work day. It might be a little different if they're confined to an office and can be monitored, but we just can't do that in my industry.

 Quoting: KipKat

Well, the smoker probably does have more years before their habit is killing them than the obese. The problem I see with obese people where I work is that they can't freaking walk or stand up. Most of the fat people who work at my job have ADA accomodations that give them a stool to sit on while they are working. They usually work cashier or they work operator position. Their legs give out on them and they can't do work anymore. That's a huge problem.

If a smoker is not smoking on the property on their own lunch break why would someone care. To tell a person what he or she can put in their own body is to claim ownership over that persons body, which is slavery.

We used to have that, but the city mandated that there could be no smoking inside a place of employment, so they had to go outside. They also, by law, have to be away from the front doors of the building etc.

Why should the employer make special considerations for smokers, when non-smokers get zero additional consideration? Would you give the alcoholic employee a place to drink? Would you give the junkie employee a place to shoot up or puff on meth?

Of the people that said yes, how many of you are actually an employer? I've been an employer for 23 years and can tell you that if a person comes to an interview and smells like smoke in any way, it is a short meeting. In my personal opinion, smoking tells me that
1) they don't care about their health
2) they are wasteful with their money
3) they have an addictive personality
4) they will take frequent breaks
5) they will increase my health care costs
6) they will smell bad

add your own, but those are my opinions only.

It drives me nuts to see my own family smoke. They have a hard time paying their bills, but can afford cartons of cigs. Morons.

I used to smoke so I know what it is to want a smoke but I quit years ago.
I worked at a car rental in Hawaii and every hour the smokers left their workplace and went to the sidewalk outside of the lot and stood and had a smoke brake the non smokers kept working. I used to think of all the lost work time in one year the business would miss out on

Would you hire an extreme sports junkie? They might get hurt and not be able to work. What about a person on many prescription drugs? Obviously they have health problems. What about a person who you see at a store buying a beer? They might come to work with a hangover and be less productive or get hurt. What about a religious person? certain days and times they will be unable to work. What about someone who rides a motorcycle? They might have trouble getting to work in bad weather. What about a tranny? Some customers might be offended by that lifestyle. What about a hot chick that over uses perfume? What about a disabled person? they might have special needs.

At my place of employment there are places outside to smoke, but we don't have public coming inside. I think it is not ok to have employees smoking outside where customers can see them.
I personally don't care if someone smokes as long as they are good workers but also where I work, the smokers take way more breaks than the non smokers.
I quit a yr and a half ago myself.
 Quoting: TKC

I'm pretty much the same. I only have a problem if it interferes with your work or if it changes how clients see the company. The second one can be a bit tricky to guess since most are too polite to verbalize their grievances, but you can often pick up on it through non-verbal communication.

i dont smoke but i see it as a socialising and stress relieving activity. not paticularly happy how the fucking corporation and thus the management who will obey their rules are treating us like robots. people are overworked work twice as hard and dont need this bs. making for a shitty atmosphere at work and constant fearmongering. fuck that! i personaly feel that smoking fear is overhyped by media and others and i dont trust anymore whatever these scums are sayin.

I'm asking because we had a meeting the other day at work. One of the employees who is a smoker was complaining because they don't allow the employees to smoke outside the front door. She doesn't understand why she isn't allowed to do that if customers are allowed to smoke outside the front doors.

Management said they have a special place in their heart for smokers but our number one customer complaint is long lines and if the customers see a ton of employees standing ourside smoking and they only have 2 registers open, then the customers get mad.

They have a carport on the north side of the building out of sight for the smokers to smoke at, but they are going to have to move it because the grocery pick up is going to be put in on that side of the building.

I just thought, thank God I quit smoking and I don't have to worry about that kind of thing. But, I wondered how other people feel about hiring smokers. Does it cause problems for your business because your employees smoke?
