in the old days, the roman caesars claimed right of rulership through the imperial cult, which elevated Caesar to a god status.
basically I am king because I am divine.
and this fitted well with the pagan polytheistic beliefs of the that time.

all historians would admit to the following statement: right before the advent of Christianity polytheism and paganism grew unpopular among the gentiles, and Judaism got really really REALLY popular especially among the gentiles of Syria turkey and Egypt, where Jews had thriving communities.

obviously the monotheistic Judaism threatened Caesar's right to rule.

but then a twist... CHRISTIANITY the poor gentiles couldn't tell which is which, Christianity sounded good, way better than their old paganism.

but what really happened? the pope got a right to rule through jesus... and what did he do? he gave his blessing to Caesar!!!
and later the office of Caesar was completely abolished and the pope became Caesar.

what a weird line of history.

I really don't understand what was behind the splitting of the empire into western and eastern halves.
but at some point there was a shift of power from the office of the emperor to the Vatican and the pope.

it seems that somehow the invading barbaric tribes such as the visigoths ostrogoths and vandals who ended the western empire, somehow remained loyal to the pope... I don't know why, but that's what happened.
so few centauries later we have kingdoms such as the franks England Germany etc... all loyal to the Vatican.
now the Vatican allowed them to fight among eachother, but not to much, and whoever disobeyed the Vatican was excommunicated and at risk of war with the other loyal kingdoms.
those kingdoms even mastered a crusade on behalf of the Vatican.
it seems as if the legions of old, became kingdoms and the generals - kings.

heck the Vatican even created a kingdom called the holy roman empire which existed for a while.

the Vatican also created the Templars, which by some weird circumstances became freemasonry.

the Vatican found it useful, because the old system of rulership via kings became obsolete, as the people grew rebellious, so the Vatican utilized the freemasons to rule instead, as 'representatives of the people' in the graeco system of democracy.

so... in one way or another, all known leaders today are loyal to the pope.
