A United States of Europe would have been a good idea but the EU is based on the Soviet model so they screwed that up from the start. It has become the EUSSR instead.

It has everything to do with immigration and a disconnection between the politicians in power and the constituents.

An immigrant with an EU passport is given the same "non negotiable freedom of movement," this includes immigrants that went through Germany from Syria and such.

The UK is not part of Schengen and therefore has border control inside the union. The EU passports states the holder country of birth (actually birthplace), and it would therefore be possible to dismiss many of the immigrants on the UK border if they did not have legal business in the UK.

The Nordic countries also have border control now and very many such people are stopped at the borders, even if we are member of Schengen.
