Depends on where you live and what you can get away with. There are all kinds of trespasser measures that can be taken if you have the money and live somewhere where the township won't harass you.

I knew an old man who strung up bare wire and plugged it into the wall. stripped down some cheap extension chords, stuck sticks into the ground, made sure nothing was touching from either leg and it was all staying up, Plugged it in and waited. not too long he heard it. went out with his gun, perp long gone, he hastily pulled up his wires in case cops showed up which they never did. perp never returned.
