I've seen forks put on backwards, wheels so bent that they rub the brakes. saddles not properly attached. brakes that would fail. johnsnow |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49275180 just needs new tires and brakes now and then. No need to spend $4000 to get a "good" mountain bike. I wouldn't recommend that. You don't need to spend $4000, but WalMart bikes are heavy, unsafe junk. Tons of trail worthy bikes for $100 on Craigslist these days - also tons of $100 junk bikes as well. For $200 you can get some higher end made in the USA bikes from the 80s and 90s. Literally everything is inferior on a WalMart bike. The frame is low quality and heavy. On a high end bike it's a light weight spring. The tires on a WalMart built are heavy and sap acceleration. Higher end bikes have lightweight wheels with better bearings that give more acceleration and a better riding experience. Components on WalMart bikes are made of lower quality material and add more weight to the bike. Higher end components function better and are made from better material and are lighter weight. If you still ride look for a late 80s mid 90s steel Stumpjumper for $200. Avoid suspension unless you are prepared to possibly replace something on an older suspension system. You would get a much better riding experience for not a lot of money. |

If you appreciate a the handling and durability of a really nice bike (not talking about a DH machine that you could take to a trellis park) you don't have to spend 4k, but you get by with spending 1k for a used one. |
Louve User ID: 72485562 United States 07/04/2016 02:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I bought a "Schwinn" from Wal-Mart several years ago...dual suspension, disc brakes. I thought it was the shit for just over $200. I later found out that Schwinn had sold out to some Chinese company and it started to make sense. I soon found that the rear "shock" wasn't a shock at all, but just a spring over the top of a tub and rod that looked like a shock. The front shocks weren't adjustable of course. Honestly, the brakes seemed pretty decent and it shifted good, but it was horrible to try to ride it. Ever see a car doing down the road with bad shocks? Yep, that's what this "mountain" bike rode like lol. "Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams, Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems." Anonymous Coward User ID: 69572328 Canada 07/04/2016 03:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So I spent a whopping $129 for a Walmart mountain bike a few weeks ago. Weight is about 40 pounds. I use it on my property to ride trails and have been perfectly happy with it. Of course I don't know shit about what is good for a mountain bike so I'm probably the target customer for one of these. So far it's been great. If I keep up the bike riding then I'll probably spend more for a lighter weight one in the future. But for the money they're great. |
