Hospice or Attempted Murder
Hospice or Attempted Murder

My mother,92,was active and enjoying life just a month ago.
She played bridge, went to folkdance club, watched TV, read
books, enjoyed eating, cooked a little , did the dishes, went for walks
outside with a walker but inside didn't use the walker. She could hear
and see ok and didnt have any major diseases except arthritis.

Nine months ago she had a fall and ended up in the hospital
with DELIRIUM which she recovered from after a few weeks with an IV because
she was not eating or drinking enough. She came home and
was doing well.

A month ago she had to have her Gaul bladder removed. She was fine after
the operation.
My sister then dumped her off in a skilled nursing facility as she
was going on a vacation for a week.

After a week in the skilled nursing facility my mother starting developing
delirium. With the delirium she began to eat and drink less and less.

At this point my sister who has POA, Power of Attorney for healthcare said to
me she is never going to let my mother have an IV or go to the hospital to be treated
for the delirium because she doesn't want her to be poked or prodded.

My mother did not go into skilled nursing to die. My mother told me after her
Gaul bladder surgery she did not want to die. My mother has never said she
wanted to die and was relatively healthy for her age and had a decent quality of life.

Unfortunately since my mother had previously transferred POA from me to my sister
I could do nothing but watch my mother dying in front of me. For eight days I tried
to feed my mother by spoonful after spoonful of yogurt and water or juice.

I knew that she would soon die and unless there was a miracle.
On the eighth day my mother had a Provoked seizure probably due to
dehydration, starvation and a bladder infection. The skilled nursing then
sent her back to the hospital.

There she got an IV and antibiotics and in two days began eating and drinking.
After five days there she was transferred back to skilled nursing with the IV
port in her arm for antibiotics. It was removed after a week.

She is there now and is beginning to recover from the delirium. Some days
she is very lucid but some days she does not make a lot of sense.
Still she is my mother. I do not know if she will make a full recovery or may
always have some of this delirium.

Is what my sister did attempted murder? Adult protective services was called and
they did nothing even when my mother was starving and being dehydrated.

I have not been able to find anything similar on the net. It would seem to me
that denying medical care to someone for days is both illegal and immoral unless
that person wants to die, and is in a hospice where a doctor has said they have only
six months to live.

What say you good people?

This type of thing happens more than you think. Be aware, in nursing homes, the patients are often given medicines to "help them rest". These are usually benzodiazapines such as Ativan or Xanax. This makes the patient sleep so the nurse doesn't have to fool with them. Benzodiazapines or even sleep aids like Ambien are to be used cautiously in the elderly because they hang around for days and can cause delirium-like symptoms. Ask your sister to tell the staff not to give your mother any medicines for sleep or anxiety or anything that has a sedating affect. Sounds like if she's alert, she will eat and drink. Check into this. I hope it helps. I witnessed this with my own mother and I am in the medical field.

Re: Hospice or Attempted Murder
It not attempted murder, but it is a shitty situation. Older people, more often than not, die in the care of hospitals and nursing homes. These people taking care of them are not their family, and therefor do not give adequate care. My grandmother died in a nursing home...most likely due to bed sore infections. How negligent do you have to be to let an older person get bed sores from laying down too long? My grandmother was already past her good days, so I was relieved when she died. I'm sorry for your situation, god bless.

Mom is now on Depakote for seizures which she does not
need since it was a provoked seizure. She was on it before
and it made her sleepy, confused, and maybe hallucinate.

Sister is a cunt and does not listen to me.
Sister worships the god Zocor and had mom put on that crap
9 months ago. It made mom confused, depressed, tired and weak muscles. Sister is an evil bitch.

I say what sister did is attempted murder.

Well it sounds like your mom had a UTI that caused her confusion. Now that she is alert and oriented you should sit down with her and your sister and outline exactly what she wants to happen medically in the future. She should fill out an Advanced Directive and have a POLST completed with her MD. This happens all the time in all levels of care and we will respect the wishes of the patient if they have been made clear ahead of time.

You betcha this little twat was "helping" your mother a hand in the "right" direction. Especially with what you just described money wise. She probably convinced your mom by stating the exact same thing about you.

At any rate: if your mother betrayed you for being her conscientious guardian, then it's probably what she had coming anyway.

I know it's hard ... Life's an unfair joke, but you'll have to let go and let that old fart reap what she has sown.

Harold Shipman: Euthanasia without request or consent

By Alex Schadenberg, International Chair – Euthanasia Prevention Coalition
Serial killer Harold Shipman

Serial killer Harold Shipman

The Press Association reports that a recent two-part documentary marking ten years since the suicide of serial killer Dr. Harold Shipman refers to his actions as “euthanasia.”

In 2000 Shipman was given 15 life sentences for murder, “although many more were suspected,” as the Press Association so cautiously phrases it. (According to The BBC, “police believe he may actually have killed up to 215 patients.”)

The documentary examines some of the deaths attributed to Dr Shipman and interviews some of the family members of his victims. The article reports:

Jack Shelmerdine, whose father – also called Jack – died at the hands of the GP, said he and his family had a greater suspicion that there was a problem with hospital care than their doctor being at fault.

The son of one of serial killer Harold Shipman’s victims still maintains he was a “good doctor” and said he views the killing as “euthanasia”.

He had been present when Shipman delivered the lethal injection. Mr Shelmerdine recalled: “I was concerned that my father was still unconscious, still asleep as we were thinking, and I rang Dr Shipman and I remember his words were, ‘Oh, he might well make it’. But those words, ‘he might make it’ seemed odd to me.

“And I just wondered whether questions ought to be asked. I wasn’t thinking in terms of Dr Shipman having done anything. We were more inclined to think that the hospital had done something wrong rather than Shipman.

“It is murder, but I would like to think of it as euthanasia. Twisted logic. That’s life.”

Beyond the problem of family members who agree with euthanasia, another major difficulty with euthanasia is that most family members are typically unaware of what is actually happening, or that comments from a family member are misconstrued, resulting in that person’s death. Putting these two components together helps explains why statistics from Belgium indicate that up to 32% of all assisted deaths are done without request.

Reporting on Part One, The Press Association states

In the first programme, “Harold Shipman: Driven To Kill,” a former colleague from his early years practising medicine at Pontefract General Infirmary, the then ward sister Margaret Sivorn, said he was a “brilliant doctor”.

“The consultants liked him. He got on well with his colleagues. The patients absolutely couldn’t ever say a bad thing about him,” she said.

“They felt calm and comfortable with him and knew that he was looking after them properly. He was always professional, always, and you always felt at ease with him. He’d have a smile with them, a little joke with them, but professional to his fingertips.”

Another difficulty with modern euthanasia (besides uncritical media sympathy for it) is that the attitude or the intention of the doctor is often unknown. Unlike the movies, the euthanasia doctor doesn’t wear a dark hat or Jack boots.

The second part of the documentary is titled: “Catching Dr Death.”

Dr Harold Shipman is possibly the best known serial killing doctor, but other, less known doctors have also been prosecuted.

If euthanasia is legalized, it would be nearly impossible to protect people from a doctor intent on killing patients based on his or her own attitudes, personal desires, addictions, or need for control.

Mom has always been good to me. She just made a mistake putting my sister in charge of her life.
I am going to fight for her.
