Entangled Particles Reveal Even Spookier Action Than Thought

But zoom in enough, and those common-sense notions seem to evaporate. At the subatomic scale, particles can become entangled, meaning their fates are bizarrely linked. For instance, if two photons are sent from a laser through a crystal, after they fly off in separate directions, their spin will be linked the moment one of the particles is measured. Several studies have now confirmed that, no matter how far apart entangled particles are, how fast one particle is measured, or how many times particles are measured, their states become inextricably linked once they are measured.

For nearly a century, physicists have tried to understand what this means about the universe. The dominant interpretation was that entangled particles have no fixed position or orientation until they are measured. Instead, both particles travel as the sum of the probability of all their potential positions, and both only "choose" one state at the moment of measurement. This behavior seems to defy notions of Einstein's theory of special relativity, which argues that no information can be transmitted faster than the speed of light. It was so frustrating to Einstein that he famously called it "spooky action at a distance."

To get around this notion, in 1935, Einstein and colleagues Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen laid out a paradox that could test the alternate hypothesis that some hidden variable affected the fate of both objects as they traveled. Archaeologists have discovered an "exceptional" gold coin emblazoned with the Roman Emperor Nero's face at a site in Jerusalem.

The coin dates to around A.D. 60, shortly before the Romans destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70, sacking the city and tearing down the Second Temple, an important holy site for Judaism. It was discovered during excavations of Mount Zion and probably came from a Jewish home, according to archaeologists.




The mansion, discovered in 2013, contained a stash of Murex sea snail shells. These snails were the source of an expensive purple dye used during the first century A.D., and the discovery suggested that the Jewish priestly class may have been involved in regulating the dye-making industry, Gibson speculated at the time.

Archaeologists presented today the remains of 10 dogs, 2 guinea pigs and a human buried thousands of years ago inside the Parque de las Leyendas (City Zoo), in the district of San Miguel.

Lucénida Carrion, head of archaeology for the site, said the discovery belongs to the pre-Incan culture of Lima. The dogs were found individually and investigators believed they served as a guide to their owners afterlife, while the guinea pigs were buried as an offering to the gods.

“The cuy (guinea pig) of the Andes was a very important food source, and these dogs were buried next to their owners to serve as guide to reach the afterlife,” explained the archaeologist.

The excavations in the fortress are also the first archaeological diggings on the eastern coast of the Black Sea.

Cybele, an Anatolian mother goddess, is the symbol of prosperity with her pregnant belly, seated on her throne.

In Anatolian mythology she was the personification of the earth. In Greek mythology in which she was equated to Earth-goddess Gaia, Cybele was mostly associated with fertile nature, mountains, town and city walls, as well as wild animals such as lions.

Neolithic figurine, over 7,000 years old, unearthed at Turkey’s Çatalhöyük

Archaeologists at Turkey's neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in central Anatolia have unearthed a "unique" complete female figurine, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said on Tuesday.

The statuette, measuring 17 centimeters (6.7 inches) long and weighing one kilogram (2.2 pounds), is considered unique due to its intact form and fine craftsmanship; it dates back to about 5500-8000 BC, a statement said.
