Re: I honestly can't understand why people believe in a specific god, Jesus, or any particular religion
I simply don't believe in anything I can't experience and explain by myself.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72313746

OP you might very well enjoy researching the field of Thanatology, as well as exploring material about the nature of Consciousness... The real value comes not from merely accepting whatever it is that you explore - but from the reflection & contemplation that it inspires within you and how that serves to alter your state of awareness..

I\ll have to check that out, thanks.

Idk how they think they can corral something as primal and wild as God in something like religion. It seems arrogant and preposterous to me.
And then to claim there is some dire penalty for not subscribing to a certain religion seems downright dangerous, as if they presume to speak for God and pronounce some ugly thing to be Gods mind.

Re: I honestly can't understand why people believe in a specific god, Jesus, or any particular religion
I understand somebody believing in a greater power, although I don't. I understand not believing in evolution, I myself think it has many gaps (despite being an atheist). I simply don't believe in anything I can't experience and explain by myself.

So, even if you do believe in A GOD, how come you believe in a Christian god, Allah, Annunaki, Jesus. How come you don't doubt your god, how come you believe a loving god would allow all the misery and pain and injustice that exists in the world, how come you think a god would punish people for eternity for not believing in him?

TLDR: Believing in the concept of god, that I understand. Believing in anything that you've ever been taught about a god - that puzzles me.

I don't see why you feel the need to put others down for their faith OP? You don't believe, that's your choice but others have the same freedom of choice also. You aren't special.

Re: I honestly can't understand why people believe in a specific god, Jesus, or any particular religion
The is either nothing, something, everything or God.

Clearly there is not nothing.

There cannot just be something, as that is just arbitrary.

If there is everything, then anything that is not God will be consumed by God.

That leaves God.
 Quoting: Beneneth

Fine. But WHICH god??????
Thats what I also dont get...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69384589

Aaahhhh, I have a suggestion.

Ask God... two things:

o If He exists, to let you know.

o Which God is He, so that you can follow the True God.

Fair enough?

Re: I honestly can't understand why people believe in a specific god, Jesus, or any particular religion
The problems with religions (or concepts of God) is that they can't all be true at the same time. So maybe they're all wrong...

Ever noticed that no world religion has a concept of God that tells its believers to be independent thinkers and, if necessary, revolt against religion and the society that religion is rooted in? That's because all world religions are tools for crowd control. Nothing else. There might be a God somewhere, but you can't find it in any of the world's religions.

And even if there's a God, he/she/it is probably just an evil f*ck, because what else is this life than a maze probably conceived by a sadist? You live a difficult life, and then you die with a good chance of lying in your own shit while fighting for your last breath. Why should anyone be thankful towards some "God" for that?

Oh by the way, google "Gnosticism" or "demiurge".

Yah that demiurge thing is disturbing.

Then the next question is why is it allowed to run loose?

Maybe the reason people are susceptible to the vagaries of religion is because the whole God thing is so bizarre and disturbing.

The whole thing of being alive in an universe is bizarre.

Ever had this kind of experience, suddenly in the middle of the day and out of the blue?

Ever been dead ? Huh , no ? Obviously you havent. I was killed when a million gallon fuel tank blew up. Am i here to convince you that God exists ? No , simply he does. Whether or not you believe is irrelevant. It does make me sad that you dont. At the time of my death i was not what most would call an avid Christian. Punishment for eternity for not believing? Its simply YOU have chosen to separate yourself from the perfect source of love. You have chosen to worship youself and be your own source of love. But i caution you this , you by non belief have chosen a perfect separation from love and have chosen perfect evil , perfect horror, perfect pain , perfect sickness , perfect hate because these things do not belong with the God of perfect love. OH and it is a choice , even if you chose ignorance

How come everybody doubting god in this thread has logical and eloquent answers, but those who believe in god just tell you to have faith or that they died and saw what happens after that or straight-up insult you (no i'm not autistic, thanks).

Whatever you believe, there is only one truth, and it is likely that this universe is a virtual reality created by an advanced civilisation, possibly for the entertainment of someone we refer to as God.

Yeah the simulation theory is an interesting idea, makes you wonder what the core reality is like, if we are indeed a simulation. But if this is a simulation, I'm a damn boring NPC.

Then shut the hell up about your 'god'. We have to put up with churches and fucking mosques on every bloody corner and quite frankly, I'm sick to death of it all.
Religion is a waste of time, materials and energy.
And it is mind numbingly fucking boring.
Believe in your god but keep him/it to yourself. Do so and we will shut up too; I promise you.

The hardships and evil on this planet are understandable if we look at it from the perspective of the Earth being a combination of a prison/kindergarten. Maybe we are here as undeveloped souls to earn our right to go on into the universe by developing the right qualities that are required to be there, the main one being integrity. We return over and over again until we get it right, with memory of earlier existences being wiped before each life because otherwise the right qualities would not develop naturally.
Food for thought.

I agree. I like a little something from everywhere.

People do not understand the concept of God.

In my opinion Christianity is lazy: you don't have to work at being a good person you just have to believe that Jesus died for your sins.

Big deal!

Is Jesus dying on the cross a metaphor for what?

Every religion has a metaphor that shows us the light is within and that we are all Godlike.

People don't understand religions are like big box stores competing for dollars.

This is not so, you need to believe Jesus died for your sins with a level of belief that brings about good works, true repentance, and a developing relationship with God, a relationship that will make you aware of even more of your sin, and repentance about that.

If you don't have these things, then you really do not believe, but if you want them, just ask God.
