The pilot whales had been pursued by a small fleet of 25 boats after being spotted off the island of Viðoy and were driven towards the approved “killing beach” at Hvannasund on Tuesday. Three weeks ago the same beach witnessed the first controversial Grindadráp of the summer, otherwise known as the Grind, which saw 43 pilot whales killed with “spinal lances” by the islanders to provide meat for the community. Pilot whales are not endangered. |
