The original screenplay was written by Paul Schrader and he wanted it to be quasi-religious like Saul/Paul on the road to Damascus. Spielberg wanted it to be more simplistic, "Steven, I don't want the first guy to go to another world to open a McDonald's," Schrader said, "That's exactly what I want!" and then Schrader left the project. Spielberg came very close to getting Steve McQueen to star but McQueen said although he'd love to do other couldn't because he can't cry on film as Neary does at the end. A film about Neary returning would be tricky. Dreyfuss isn't a big name anymore and alien films have been done to death although it would be great to see a serious film about benign aliens. I'm surprised no one has ever made a "space brothers" type film, the aliens are akmost always nefarious. I'm surprised Spielberg never revisited E.T. |

IF it were made in the style of the time.
Nowadays, sequels turn out dark and warring. (compare Independence Day 1 & 2)
Signs of the times. |
