It's been a mess down there for the past two days... some places have received over 30 inches of rain and it's still falling. State Troopers telling people along I-10 and I-12 that the people stuck on the highways should be prepared to sleep in their cars.

Roads being closed everywhere. Rivers overflowing everywhere.

Here's one of the many rescues today:

Hey

I am fine and all my family is fine - the new baby is wonderful ! - My 2 daughters with the one having the new baby stayed at Mother-in-Law last night. The roads are crazy but I made it to work for some early morning work and then off to see my house and bad the water got in it.

I had sand bags at both doors and I think it will be close to water in the house or not. But I have a feeling water got in.

3 rivers that make up the Amite Basin all crested from 4 to 8 ft above record crest.

You do the math and go from there - crazy flooding in parts of effected areas like my house that have never seen flood waters !

That's the deal - GLP is a awesome place but - those of you that make fun of folk that have just lost everything and others that have had to fight for life are sick in the brain

Those of you calling out Louisiana - I got a deal for you
Lets pour 31 inches of rain all over your area in less than 48 hours and see what happens and how you handle it

I am thankful that most of you send Love and Prayers

Blessings

We left there Friday morning after flood warnings started popping up on my phone all around us.. We were there on vacation and it was our last day anyway.. We were at the Park downtown New Orleans when I got the warnings, and then it started dumping.. Water was standing all along HWY 10 on our way out of there..

No, linkie...so I'm stinkie...but I just heard many stores in the area (that aren't flooded) are running out of food. This is due to distribution channels being flooded. Even when the waters recede, it could be ugly for a few days.

I wonder how many people that are preppers there who had food storage (and other items acquired over the years) have lost it due to flood water damage or contamination? Also, I am sure that the rest of the country will rally to help with donations once they can get through with trucks.(that said the past two weeks we have not been able to find our fave brand of bottled water at Sam's Club which I found very odd) But that doesn't help those who need food and especially water right now. I pray that the Lord will be with them. Also earlier I saw on facebook about a desperate pet owner wanting someone to go to her house and break a window if necessary to rescue her two dogs (labs) that are in crates inside her home. I can't stop thinking about that and worrying for them! Yes, I know that some people are trapped, too, but the plight of innocent animals just touches my heart so much.

Cost of living was too cheap there. Now prices will rise to pay for the reconstruction, and many low-paying cleanup jobs will be available. Those uninsured (most?) are totally screwed. I'd suggest moving N to a prosperous area, even if U have to walk/hitch-hike. It's just gonna happen there again and again as warming continues. Good fortune.

Move to a more prosperous area? Like Seattle? Median house value in Seattle is $585,400. But Seattle is booming, King County is booming.

I work with many people from the Denham area. The ones I work with are salt of the earth people. They take care of themselves and those in their community who need help and are deserving. They are prepper types as well. Not from a sense of TSHTF type scenario, but just because that is what country people do. They probably did lose a lot of their supplies.

The plight of the animals is heartbreaking. The memories of Katrina are still pretty vivid for most. I thought that they would have worked out the issues with pet rescues. I saw an article or something where the legislature was asked to take up this issue. Not sure if our elected officials did anything though.

Hey guys,

Thursday (8/16) right before the storm hit. A very large military convoy was rolling in on a train through Baton Rouge. Same vehicles being used to extract people now.
I was on Acadian near I-10. Railroad rides across acadian along the interstate.

Hope this information is useful. I'd like to know more about this storm.
Never imagined anything like this in my life. My entire family lost everything and stuck on a island. The National Guard will not let them leave. And I've lost count on how many friends lost their homes. We are sheltering some friends now who were air lifted by a black hawk!

90% of Denham Springs has been effected.

I left that area in 91 after a 2 year stint of trying it out - it was an absolute mess at traffic time way back then - I can't even imagine it now.
Also that kind of weather you have to grow up in it - it will just kill a Southern Sunshine person - believe me I know - I moved there from the Sunshine State and moved right back after 2 years of rain and traffic (with a few weeks sporadically of enjoying the most beautiful place my eyes could behold because it is beautiful out there) but my god the fucking rain.

Just talked to my son. He helped out at a local church today. They put out an email blast that they needed water for people in French Settlement. Received something like 10,000 bottles.

Also his girlfriend helped out at the River center. She said the greatest need was baby food and formula. From what she saw, they were well supplied otherwise.

Close to 5,000 people staying in Baton Rouge shelters, many with pets, as volunteers try to lift spirits

Amid the cots, canines and cats that cluttered a sound stage Monday at Celtic Media Centre, Sondra Honore's family stood out.

Their green turtle, Zeus, was perhaps the most unique pet among the thousands of people and animals who lodged Sunday night and into Monday at a movie production facility that has held the likes of Tom Cruise and Jessica Alba shooting blockbusters. She laughed at the way people reacted to Zeus crawling along her cot if only to keep from crying about floods that destroyed the home she bought in 2012 after scrimping for years.

Honore was one of 4,857 people staying in shelters Monday in Baton Rouge, the Department of Children and Family Services counted. More than 30 shelters have been set up over the region but the largest on Monday in Baton Rouge were at Celtic, the Baton Rouge River Center and Southern University.

Those staying at the shelters said they were amazed at the kindness of the strangers who showed up in droves with blankets, snacks, games, animal crates and cheery attitudes. As Honore and her family recounted the story of multiple houses and cars flooding, volunteers brought them peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, dog treats, water, Powerade and board games within the span of half an hour.

Rainfall totals as of yesterday morning, Sunday, August 14. These totals reflect from Friday morning to Sunday.

LIVL1 LIVINGSTON 21.86
KENL1 KENTWOOD 18.08
KBTR BATON ROUGE ASOS 16.21
DCHL1 DUTCHTOWN #2 15.44
OSYM6 TANGIPAHOA/OSYKA 14.96
GVLL1 AMITE/GRANGEVILLE 14.70
JCHL1 JONES CK@O HAMND HWY 13.32
[link to whnt.com]

Livingston is just east of Baton Rouge with nearly 2 feet of rain. That's just mind-blowing. Stay safe people!! Don't drive into it if you don't know how deep. Even "shallow" looking water can sweep you off the road.

-------------------------------------------
Rain trivia for you Haarptards:

[link to weather.com (secure)]
In late-July of 1979, the center of Tropical Storm Claudette moved inland. South of Houston in the town of Alvin, a record 43 inches of rainfall fell in just 24 hours, which stands as the greatest 24-hour rainfall total in United States history.

In northwest Pennsylvania, the town of Smethport recorded nearly three feet of rain (34.30 inches) in just 12 hours on July 18, 1942. This is the biggest 12-hour rainfall total in United States history.

A rainfall total of 13.80 inches was estimated to have fallen near Burnsville, West Virginia over the course of just one hour on August 4, 1943.

In just 60 seconds, 1.23 inches of rain fell in Unionville, Maryland on July 4, 1956. If that rainfall rate had continued for an entire hour - it did not - the total would have been 73.80 inches! Not only is this a record United States one-minute rainfall total, it's also the world record.
