I will close by expressing one of my favorite concepts (roughly translated) about Shinto: The Shinto Gods all love you in their own different ways. You do not have to even be aware of them or their love, or do anything in particular in response if you don't want to. The love is given freely and shines down on you impartially, just as the sun shines on all plants and animals whatever their behavior. The Gods do not demand: they bestow. (To be fair, some might disagree with this, especially priests and devotees who spend a lot of time and effort doing complicated rituals to appease the Gods. Nevertheless it's a pleasant idea, at least to me.)  |
