I have an old 1986 GMC box truck I just brought. It has a parking brake that does not work well. I need to know the on/off position of the brake.

Pull it toward you to ENGAGE the brake. If you look closely, the end of the lever will turn(it may turn hard if the truck hasn't been driven). Turn the end of the lever CLOCKWISE to take slack out of the cable, which will enable the brake to hold more securely. Do not overtighten, as this will cause the parking brake to be always slightly engaged, which will cause a brake fire after a few miles.

The silver colored portion of the lever should turn. In the photo where the lever is extended, the brake is engaged.

I had the parking brake disengaged but it was pretty tight on the knurled area I turned it many revolutions clockwise. The front brakes were very hot after a 50 mile ride, wondering if that might of been the issue.

Truck is to move tables from events that I host in Missouri.

It's a 366 8 cylinder gas. Only will drive a round trip once or twice a month with it.
