I have an old 1986 GMC box truck I just brought. It has a parking brake that does not work well. I need to know the on/off position of the brake. | |

It has a parking brake that does not work well. I need to know the on/off position of the brake. Pull it toward you to ENGAGE the brake. If you look closely, the end of the lever will turn(it may turn hard if the truck hasn't been driven). Turn the end of the lever CLOCKWISE to take slack out of the cable, which will enable the brake to hold more securely. Do not overtighten, as this will cause the parking brake to be always slightly engaged, which will cause a brake fire after a few miles. In the photo where the lever is extended, the brake is engaged.
