How can I stop dumpster divers??

Lace the dumpster with rat poison. After a few deaths, it will be propagated on the grapevine that your dumpster is bad mojo.

Some people dumpster dive for other things as well. Not just food and recyclables. They look for anything that can be reused or repurposed.

I have seen where there are groups and clubs that dumpster dive for things. College kids (millenials who don't want to work or pay for something). They also dive in restaurant dumpsters to get meals after the place closes and they throw everything out. All just to see what they can get. Huge difference between needing to and wanting to. Yuck.

They are starting it by trespassing on private property.

I have a right to live in a place without bums overrunning the property.

Trust me, this isn't some sort of club of people. It's bums.

The thing that gets me is how they don't even try to be discreet or in a hurry. They'll spend hours hanging out, park their bicycles out front. It's like an afternoon at the mall for them.

My rent is more than most peoples mortgages. $2,000/month.

This is true OP. Whenever you see people doing this sort of thing you just have to say to yourself, "Therefore but for the grace of God go I."

Personally I'd put a can opener, some tins of tuna and a loaf of bread in the bin. Maybe even a bottle of mayo to go with the tuna.

Who knows, maybe one day I will be the one eating out of the dumpster.

write your congressman and demand that these stranded humans be rescued without delay or prejudice, if he doesn't respond, press charges on your local regime for gross negligence with criminal intent and crimes against humanity. these people had lives before they were betrayed, and one day you might be one of them, think about that.

Why not do this…. Next time you hear the guy dumpster diving, go down, be civil, and offer him $5 / night to protect your dumpster from dumpster divers… you will be giving him a job, and supporting your fellow man!

I will not do anything to encourage that sort of behavior. I have to work for a living and they aren't any better than I am. They can work or starve.

The only thing you can do, since you don't own the property (ha ha) is get the complex owners to do something.

You might call the city/town and find out if there is some health violation code they can enforce.

This is good...take a shovel and a cardboard box and find a road kill once a week. The bleach and ammonia is probably worth a try too.

I thought about doing that prank where you tie several full garbage bags together in the shape of a dead human body that has been wrapped up and then leave it there for them.

Lots of people have been homeless, even me. But I stayed in a homeless shelter, although I was only homeless for one and a half weeks.

If it wasn't for that homeless shelter I would've had to sell or hock stuff, or starve and probably eat out of bins.

Homelessness isn't as much fun as everyone says it is.

I know people who were homeless for months, I couldn't believe it. I was like how did things get so bad you were homeless for that long?

Most of the homeless in Australia are either drunks or drug addicts. Sure people get kicked out of home, but it's pretty easy to find a place to stay until you get welfare/a job and get your own place.

I never understood why people would choose drink/drugs and a life of abuse on the streets. It's something that disturbs me to this day. Why spend your rent money to get high or drunk, knowing that what little you have could be stolen so someone else can get high of drunk.

I will never understand why people choose a life of poverty.

What do you do if your kitchen starts attracting ants? You stop leaving a mess behind.

That said, you sound like a mean person. One day, you will be one of those you now look down upon. You'll see.

I honestly believe that some people simply have no pride and don't care about living in a normal society. They don't mind sleeping under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters.

What's really disturbing is when I see young, able bodied guys in their early 20's doing it. No shame, no concern, no ambition in life. They are quite content to be bum.

I've lived in a few third world countries.

Obviously in rich areas mostly.

IN those countries people go through the bins but are very courteous and tidy about it.


I used to leave stuff like clothes and food next to the bins to make it easier. But they will still go through the bins becuase not everyone does this.


WHat OPS story rally shows (assuming its not just a bait thread which it most likely is) is that the USA is fast approaching the social condition of a third world country.

That's true; however the coming Robot Revolution will make anyone demanding more than 30 cents an hour unemployable...

We are expected to reach Artificial General Intelligence in between 2025 and 2040. If you aren't retired and relatively wealthy by then, you will end up dumpster diving...

Realistically I would anticipate that we're already much closer to AGI than what is publically known.

That's true, I could understand people rorting Centrelink/welfare. But to just be an unemployable/homeless person eating out of bins. They must be going through hell. I wouldn't wish that kind of life on anyone.

You hear horror stories of violent sexual abuse of the homeless and think why would you be homeless if you knew that could happen to you...

Yet people think they're different until something like that does happen to them. But they don't get their own place as soon as they can, they just get drunk/high and try to forget...
