They look for anything that can be reused or repurposed. I have seen where there are groups and clubs that dumpster dive for things. College kids (millenials who don't want to work or pay for something). They also dive in restaurant dumpsters to get meals after the place closes and they throw everything out. All just to see what they can get. Huge difference between needing to and wanting to. Yuck. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 72642215 United States 08/27/2016 09:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I recently moved to a place that isn't gated and the number of homeless bums that are dumpster diving all hours of the day and night is really starting to piss me off. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72642215 What could I toss in there to deter these people? I thought about buying some cans of Tuna and opening them up and sprinkling them in there, but I doubt that would be too effective. These guys are like relentless cockroaches. I'm so sorry you can't afford gated living anymore. But don't come to the real world and start shit with the homeless. Since you can't figure it out for yourself, they've got it bad enough already. Without your uppity ass getting involved. They are starting it by trespassing on private property. I have a right to live in a place without bums overrunning the property. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72820955 Not possible. I live in an apartment complex. The dumpsters are in a permanent place. Ah, so a low life apartment dweller is looking down on the homeless. Why don't you get another job and buy a house, ya lazy arsed bum. |

The thing that gets me is how they don't even try to be discreet or in a hurry. They'll spend hours hanging out, park their bicycles out front. It's like an afternoon at the mall for them. |

Think for a minute Mr. Privilege… if you was homeless, you wouldn't dive in the "coloured" neighborhood, because they even eat the chicken bones… Why not do this…. Next time you hear the guy dumpster diving, go down, be civil, and offer him $5 / night to protect your dumpster from dumpster divers… you will be giving him a job, and supporting your fellow man! And remember… Yes, you are your Brother's keeper! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72870987 Costa Rica 08/27/2016 10:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think it really depends on the severity. I understand the empathy in this thread but honestly if OP is serious that this is like an all day thing, and I 'm just getting the impression that there are several of them, that's something else. That's too much. There's a bigger problem at play here and maybe community action is necessary. Quoting: alien. Yeah, I get that, too. In my small town we are known for our great generosity. Because of that, we get beaucoup homeless blowing in every late Autumn through Spring. They are a blight for the most part on our town. We have an awesome homeless shelter, our public transportation gives them free bus passes, our food bank gives our gourmet food, etc., etc. A lot of these people have no intention of improving themselves and are just here for the handouts. Many of them are drunks and quite abusive. But we must nevertheless be compassionate to those having hard times. The trick is discerning who is worthy of help and who is worthy of running out of town on a rail. Just curious…. where is this small town? I'm a "Prepper". and this is good info! |

The bleach and ammonia is probably worth a try too. I thought about doing that prank where you tie several full garbage bags together in the shape of a dead human body that has been wrapped up and then leave it there for them. |

But I stayed in a homeless shelter, although I was only homeless for one and a half weeks. If it wasn't for that homeless shelter I would've had to sell or hock stuff, or starve and probably eat out of bins. Homelessness isn't as much fun as everyone says it is. I know people who were homeless for months, I couldn't believe it. I was like how did things get so bad you were homeless for that long? Most of the homeless in Australia are either drunks or drug addicts. Sure people get kicked out of home, but it's pretty easy to find a place to stay until you get welfare/a job and get your own place. I never understood why people would choose drink/drugs and a life of abuse on the streets. It's something that disturbs me to this day. Why spend your rent money to get high or drunk, knowing that what little you have could be stolen so someone else can get high of drunk. I will never understand why people choose a life of poverty. They don't mind sleeping under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters. What's really disturbing is when I see young, able bodied guys in their early 20's doing it. Then put it on the top of the trash in the dumpster. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72519893 Problem solved. I've lived in a few third world countries. Obviously in rich areas mostly. IN those countries people go through the bins but are very courteous and tidy about it. I used to leave stuff like clothes and food next to the bins to make it easier. But they will still go through the bins becuase not everyone does this. WHat OPS story rally shows (assuming its not just a bait thread which it most likely is) is that the USA is fast approaching the social condition of a third world country. |
