Agreed... Driver may be at fault but the biker has far more to lose and should not be going so fast that he can't avoid a door being opened. It is going to happen - guaranteed.

He was at least 5 feet -- if not 10 feet -- behind the car when the door started to open, and should have been able to stop or move out of the way. He was also driving on the right hand side of the bike lane -- if he had been to the left, and paying attention, he might have been able to avoid the door.

Hope he put a good dent in that car door though... so that guy will look next time.

I preferred to bike at midnight, no traffic, easy to hear and see if there was a car around... peaceful too. Except for the occasional a-hole who would honk their horn as they went by just to scare the crap out of me.

I'm a cyclist, and I can't stand when cyclists insinuate that it's 100% the responsibility of a driver to be careful opening their door. In many "Bicycling Rules of the Road" guides, and in major cities, it is 100% the responsibility of the cyclists to avoid doors opening. It's a great courtesy for a driver to check the bike lanes before opening their door, but doing so is not a part of a vehicle operator's requirements.

You should always check before opening your door no matter what. Could just as easily been a semi truck ripping his door off. That said as a cyclist you should never count on people to do the right thing and always pay attention to your surroundings. Also for every good cyclist there is a shitty one who disobeys traffic laws and get what they deserve.

pretty sure on my written test I had to say to look in the mirror, open the door a crack and then shoulder check out the crack before opening it all the way. Also on the driving test they asked me to demonstrate that. In a parking lot, in a stall I do the same thing. Mybe a jigaboo is hiding in the shadows. I have NO compassion for him because he represents all the Nazi bicyclists that think they own the damn road. They're rude, obnoxious, road-terrorists. For those of you reading this that are bicycle enthusiasts, BLAME YOURSELVES for having cultivated and developed my attitude. It came about from your own actions and sh!tty attitudes.
