Someone above muses about how the USA descended into such a mess.

The answer is the media.

The media is powerful - evidenced by the fact that there is a huge advertising industry built around it. Business would not continue to pour billions and billions into an ineffective mechanism.

It took the internet to expose the agenda-driven "news" media, but the garden had to grow and develop first. It has done that, and now the propaganda function of the media has been exposed and is obvious.

Of course, the last to realize this is the media itself. Their 6% (and dropping) approval rating is well earned.
