how to explain to an employer about my dd-214 honorable discharge from the marines only being in a year and half?
i was in the marines from august 2007 till january 2009.
i had signed papers from my recruiter that my mos would be crash fire rescue
well after bootcamp i learned that my mos was now ordnance
and after mct
i realized that everyone who had the same mos
was promised crash fire rescue
so now my plan of being a firefighter after my 4 years
was replaced with being a person who loads heavy things
then i was sent to nas pensacola
where i was barrack support for 7 months before even starting ordnance training
i went ua for 28 days in july 2008
and when i got back
the xo and co swept it under the rug
even after i said i smoked a bunch of weed to get out
so i still stayed in
eventually i went to get a navy jag
and my 1st sergeant was cool enough to understand that i was lied to and gave me and honorable discharge

now the shitty thing
even though i got a honorable discharge
employers look down on it after they ask "why were you only in a year and a half"
especially if they are former military
look at you like a shit bag

anyone else deal with this?

Should have joined the Navy. Everyone is a firefighter. During boot camp you are trained as a shipboard firefighter. No one walks onto a ship until they are trained as a firefighter. If you go to an aircraft carrier or flight line, then you are also trained as an aircraft firefighter.

You can tell your superiors that you smoked weed all you want, they will not care. Unless it shows up on a piss test.

There are things in your post however that do not add up. I am calling some degree of bullshit.

Sounds like a general discharge. Were you court-martialed?

If you were court-martialed, it could be an other-than-honorable discharge, bad conduct discharge or dishonorable discharge.

Brilliant cause being gay is so hip and cool right now.

Use that advice and you will go from zero to hero just like Zoro the gay blade.

Then after you are hired somewhere you can revert to being a heterosexual.

It is.easy to explain. You couldn't hack it so you scammed the idiot military or civilian doctors you suffered from PTSD and got out on a medical discharge and are now fucking your fellow Americans collecting disability. I know the game my niece is in the Navy going through the same thing.

Maybe your best bet is to say that you enlisted for a specific mos but following boot camp they never sent you to that mos...after that the dispute dragged on until it reached the lawyers.

Enlistment papers were legally unclear so:
The result was you could (were offerred) 1-finish your time in current mos or 2-be honorably dicharged (since you had satisfactory completed all duties).

It was a tough decision but the mos did not suit your future so you took the honorable.

You didnt want to lie, so you included your service on the application...even though you did not fulfill your term. Normaly you dont mention your service except family etc.

You have learned to be more attentive to detail in life and did enjoy service....looking back you realize it would have been better to stick it out. You felt the marines treated you fairly.

Dont go on babbling alot of details or specifics.

He is a liar. A 1st SGT doesn't have the authority to discharge an armed forces member, they can only initiate it with the commanding officers authority and then It goes to battalion.
