WD40 : The WD stands for "Water Displacement" and is not a proper lubricant. Gear oil has long chain molecules often EP rated: EP reffering to "Extreme Pressure" and is a good lubricant but toxic.

I would suggest Vaseline is probably the best option, though when a machine starts making a grinding noise, the damage is usually done.
