the great schism occurred in 1054 which can be seen today in the split between eastern orthodoxy and roman catholism...catholic means universal and the pope is a bishop with special significance due to rome's secular prominence just like the patriachate of moscow is to the russian orthodox church..the reason for the schism was ethnic differences, the orthodox division therefore based on the many nation states...

the logic behind the schism from the orthodox viewpoint was that the catholic church had to make so many theological adjustments to stay unified globally that it became theologically flawed...also, the orthodox patriarch/bishop of moscow has now extended an olive branch to the pope/bishop of rome after all these centuries so we can get this world economy straightened out for EVERYONE BUT THE GLOBAL ELITE..
