Re: Low Hum at Night
Thanks so much for the wiki link. There is an audio link on the page that is exactly like what I'm hearing!

[link to www.massey.ac.nz]

It's this barely audible rumble that sounds almost like distant thunder, which is perhaps why I have the perception that it's coming from the sky. When I hear it I picture rolling clouds in my head.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Theres your answer. I experience this from time to time, over here in the UK

The audio link I posted is of the Auckland Hum and this article says the guy who made the recording can't hear it himself. Can you all hear the hum on that audio link? You have to turn the volume all the way up. If not everyone can hear it, I wonder why?

Re: Low Hum at Night
For the past three nights I've been awake between 2:30am and 4:30 am and have heard a strange low frequency hum that is continuous for those two hours. During the two hours I also hear helicopters that come and go but those aren't constant. I'd say the helicopters can be heard for 10-15 minutes at a stretch. The hum sounds like it is in the sky but I can't be sure. Has anyone ever heard anything like this? What could it be? Maybe chemtrail activity?

I am in central California.

I've often heard this hum. I am in Central California as well. I always hear it more intensified right before a major military action.

Hi - it's not tinnitus. Tinnitus causes a high-pitched sound and is always there. This sound I am hearing is low frequency and is louder when I go outside. It's not in my head!

Re: Low Hum at Night
Perhaps at a different time, I'd have written this off as BS, but I am quite interested to know what it is, considering I am in Southern CA, in the desert, (where sound travels extremely well as it's all flat) and I am hearing it too.

I am confident that I can tell the diff between planes, nearby traffic, and power line hum. None of these sounds are what I am hearing though, or at least I don't believe they are. It is a rather eerie sound though, especially since it is very audible once you go outside, and it is nearly impossible to get an idea of where it's originating from, all I know is seems like it's from above.

Thanks for commenting. The hum I am hearing is also more audible when I go outside. It is also impossible to tell where it is coming from and seems like it is coming from above. Definitely an eerie sound like you say!

Re: Low Hum at Night
Houston, Texas I hear it late night, and morning hours mostly. It's a low hum, low frequency , almost a pusling hum. It sometimes disturbs my sleep.
From inside, it sound like it is outside. But from outside, it is seldom noticable.
I've ruled out electrical appliances.

Some years ago, I lived in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. There was a constant beeping tone there. Only a few people noticed it.

Re: Low Hum at Night
Look. This hum phenomenon has been reported all over the world for decades. I live in England and heard the hum during the 1980s every night for months - even OUTSIDE my house yards from any electrical machinery. The noise has been discussed by politicians in the British House of Commons but remains unexplained. Even if you plug your ears, you STILL hear it, indicating that it is not an experience generated by an external sound wave but one INTERNALLY generated by direct electromagnetic stimulation of the hair cells in the Organ of Conti in the inner ear, which sends along the auditory nerve to the brain the electrical signals created by the hairs when they are set vibrating by the pressure waves in the fluid of the cochlea.

This phenomenon has an electromagnetic origin. What we don't yet know is what the nature and source of the fields responsible for them.

Re: Low Hum at Night
Last night I awoke at 3am and listened to see if I could hear the hum. I couldn't. Then just as I was about to go back to sleep, it started up loud and clear, as if a switch had been turned on! This time it only lasted 10 minutes and stopped. Ten minutes after that, I heard helicopters over my place that lasted about ten minutes.

Maybe it really is a UFO. It sounded like some gigantic craft hovering out there.

Re: Low Hum at Night
I didn't bother reading all the comments before I sent this cuz I just thought the whole maybe its your fridge thing was dumb. I'm SE part of Washington. And since I was a kid I've heard it on nights. Some say its the ghost of Ol' Horse Faced Willy (I had to. Just felt right but back to the subject, me)

Different places I've lived and just heard it and thought maybe check online to see what the business is. I don't hear it from a location but more like direction and other times I can't tell if its in the brain or something... Kinda dramatic but I don't mean like tumor or voices just kinda like when you have a headache. It's in a certain part of your brain just pounding. I know what I'm talking about anyways haha. I also hear high high pitched tones or frequency or vibrations in space... In direction. Can't even explain what or where I think the "noise" is coming from. Kay, done. If anyone actually reads this thank you! I appreciate it.

I have recently been hearing a low hum as well. I am in Beaumont, TX. 100 miles from Houston where people are also hearing it.

Very weird.
