It's nostalgic to watch, since I used to watch it as a kid in the 1980s/1990s, but I now see things I never noticed before:
- The Federation is socialist. Capitalism is dead. The Ferengi, an alien race dedicated to capitalism, are portrayed as stupid buffoons throughout the entire series.
- Worf's mate (I.e. girlfriend) was basically a feminist. She rejected marriage to Worf even though they had a child together, claiming she didn't believe in such old-fashioned traditions.
- Captain Picard gets bossed around by a blonde female admiral on several occasions. A lot of the admirals are female.
- Female authority figures are addressed with the masculine pronoun "Sir" (instead of the feminine "Ma'am").
- There's an episode where Dr. Crusher falls in love with a transgender alien, who she rejects upon the gender change but at the end of the episode laments that maybe some day people will accept such a thing.
- There's an episode where an entire planet is ruled by women and men are submissive to them.
- There's an episode where an entire planet has no concept of gender. They are all asexual (supposedly). But when Commander Riker falls in love with one of them who seems to be female, she is eventually arrested and brainwashed into being asexual like the rest of her species.
(Of course, you really realize "Trek" is liberal when you get to "DS9", and the captain is black. Then on "Voyager" it's a woman. Sheesh.) |
