Tangy User ID: 51847734 United States 10/21/2016 06:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | 2) The three men pay $30 for a hotel room. Afterwards, a five dollar overcharge is returned to them ($25 + $5 = $30). 3) The cleaning lady divides up the $5 overcharge, returning $1 to each of the three men (for a total of $3) and keeping $2 for himself ($25 + $3 + $2 = $30). Where did the missing dollar go? Nowhere. A dollar only goes "missing" because the statement "each man paid $9 for the room" is wrong: each of three men paid out a total of $9, but that $9 included both the room charge and the cleaning lady's tip. All in all, each man paid out a total of $9 and had $1 left over, completely accounting for the $30 they started with. The room cost $25, so each man paid one-third of that cost ($8.33). The cleaning lady kept a tip of $2, so each man paid one-third of that cost ($0.67) as well. Overall, each man paid out $9 ($8.33 + $0.67) for the room and cleaning lady tip and had a dollar left over: (3 x $9) + (3 x $1) = $27 + $3 = $30. Last Edited by Tangy on 10/21/2016 06:59 PM |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 56346615 Three friends decide to rent a hotel. They each spend $10 and give it to the lady at the desk. She says the room will only cost $25 a night, and proceeds to give back $5. 1 dollar was given to each of the friends, and 2 to the cleaning lady. If originally they paid $10 but each received $1 back, then 9x3=27 + 2 dollars to the cleaning lady. Where is the missing dollar? There is no missing dollar; where the "logic" here falls over in your adding the $2.00 to the $27. Subtract that $2.00 instead and karma is restored. |

(25/3)+(5/3)=(30/3) Now that we know the room was paid for (25/3) paid out we can set that aside (that is where your answer is). Now we have our (5/3)-(2/3)=1 (both sides are equivalent) there goes the money returned to the men minus the money given to the maid. To find our "missing dollar" we will consider the price of the room per guest (x) 25/3x=0. X=(25/3).....x=8.33333_ |

Where is the missing dollar? you are not subtracting correctly the solution to your miscalculation is that you fail to subtract also the two dollars given to the cleaner and only focus on the 3 dollars given to the 3 individuals and then proceed to calculate as if the hotelblady still has the other 2 dollars which she does not since she refunded 5 dollars initially Abut here is a story for your amusement... They chipped in $10 each, received $1 back...meaning, they each 'overpaid' the room charge by 66 cents. The so-called missing dollar is in that '~66 cents' × 3 that was leftover... given as a tip to the maid. ______ Simply put: Their refund should have been ~$1.66 each...but they only took $1 back, leaving ~66 cents each for a $2.00 tip. -- TRUST THE PLAN -- .......WWG1WGA...... ____________________________ still in awe of many things |
