I met a woman on craigslist.org about 2 and 1/2 years ago. We're getting married at the end of March.

I have a friend who used a dating site and the person they met and started falling for was involved in credit card fraud and identity theft. If the person hadn't been caught, who knows how much damage would have been wrought.

Are you all serious? I think you are all just saying it for the poor bloke that started this thread.

What ever happened to seeing a girl down your street each day, walking to work and then asking her to have a coffee with you after giving her a beautiful rose?

Or perhaps getting her drunk and.... Ahhh, I mean...

No, all jokes aside.

Where has giving a girl, that you seen down the street a few times, a rose gone?

Where has inviting a girl to a coffee at your local cafe gone?

Ladies and Gentleman. Allow me to introduce you to something. That something being a thought process.

You can approach a Man, you can approach a Woman in the street that you find most good looking to you and invite him/her to a coffee, or to meet your parents.

These days we have been so programmed into thinking that a woman will scream rape if we go near her; That a man will rape you if you go near him, that we are so afraid to approach anyone it's not funny.

Take a fuckin chance and live. You can usually tell a freak from a mile away. We have just been programmed to think otherwise.

Enjoy yourselves and each other.

The internet might seem like a safe way but it could still be an axe murderer on the other side waiting to meet you.

I cannot believe how we have allowed our lives to be controlled on such a hardcore level.

Get out there, meet people in groups, get to know someone that seems trustable to you, because more than likely they will be trustable and become the person you chose to live with for the rest of your life.

One nighting is not the way. And think about it, any one nighter could be your death. Just like meeting someone on the net, the street, in prostitution...

Live it or leave it. And I don't know about you, but I'd rather live life.

Re: Anyone ever USED a DATING site or have any STORIES ?
Don't look at a "Dating" site as being a "DATING" opportunity ... instead look upon it as an INTRODUCTION opportunity.

Some people that we are introduced to we "date", others we wouldn't even have a cup of coffee with. Why expect something different with a computerized introduction service?

How many people do you have to meet with casual introductions before you end up with one to go on even ONE date with? If you are normal ... LOTS. Look at these "Dating" web sites the same way and you will approach the situation with a much better frame of mind.

A rule of thumb for men is that many older women (mid forties on up) shave YEARS off of their age when they write a profile (maybe 1/3 is the group consensus of a number of older men who have tried such services) AND probably 1/3 to 1/2 use pictures that are a number of years old or are of them when they were 20 to 50 pounds less weight than they are currently.

For women looking for men ... look for inflated jobs and earnings ... I am told.

I personally have tried one "internet dating service" ... and have been VERY cautious. I look for mental instability immediately (first by the profile, then by how they write and what they say during the e-mail exchange period, then the phone call phase), and RUN the other way if someone even smells slightly of possessing that problem. First meetings are always on neutral ground and just for a cup of coffee ... forget a REAL date until after I have had a chance to get to know them. IF when I meet them for coffee if they don't match up with their profile and their written correspondence the coffee meeting is over VERY quickly and I am out of there.

When I do finally meet someone over coffee and they match up to their profile I immediately try to find out if we known at least some people in common, so I can check them out informally. I have met a few really nice people via that method, though so far no one that has really "clicked". On the other hand my pre-screening has been good enough that I have also avoided the "crazies".

I know some great people who have used the computer "dating" services and actually met someone that they have dated seriously (and in a couple of cases married). For them it was a GREAT experience.

CAUTION is the watchword with this system when first meeting someone since if you get a whiff that they aren't being honest early on you can rest assured that they are NOT the one for you (unless you like to be used and abused). There ARE crazy people out there (of both sexes), and internet claims can be easily inflated. If you approach the system cautiously there is NO guarantee you will have a great experience, but it definitely cuts down on the risk of having a really bad experience.

(two suggestions after one verifies that their appearance etc. matches their claims: Verify claimed employment early. Verify early that they do NOT have a criminal record - $50 or so for a short background check).

Sorry but it seems to me that these dating sites attract more sleezey men or women than what you would meet on the street.

They sit behind their monitors and think, "Yeah I'd like to do her!" OR "I'd like to do him!"

The proofs in the pudding. Go out there and see what you get from behind the screen. I almost guarantee you will find a one night stand before you will a long term relationship.

Whereas if you look for love in your very neighbourhood, it seems to me that they are not looking for a one night stand, because they have to live close by afterwards.

Actually, I met my now husband through the Washington Post Personals. It was great! I had actually gone out on a couple dates before I met him with some pretty nice guys from the personals. But he was it.

There is hope. Not all of them are sleazes. Just have to be very, very careful.

I signed up on eHarmony several years ago.

REALLY selective (NOT!). Within HOURS they were sending me HUNDREDS of supposed matches, some in other states (I said 50 miles).

And they continued to spam me until I dropped the email address I gave them a year later.
