Is it even possible? one famous one was the Presidential Election of 1876. Samuel Tilden won the popular vote, and the Electoral College awarded the Presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes. (the College is not required to vote in accordance with the People wishes.) Popular vote has NEVER been the criteria for picking the president. It has ALWAYS been electoral college. If you WANT popular vote to choose, change the constitution, but be WARNED that rural states would have almost literally no influence in picking the president. It would be the populous states and cities picking the president. With the electoral college, states with more livestock than people have an OVERSIZED influence on presidential elections. |

The big states wanted representation strictly according to population (the Virginia Plan) and the small states wanted representation strictly by state (the New Jersey Plan). The "Great Compromise" or the Connecticut Plan gave us 1) the senate (rep by state), 2) the house of rep (rep by population), 3) the electoral college and 4) ratification of amendments 'by state' so that we could never fix it. There are a lot of little states that like this way. |

The electoral college scares me, as it is not a balance of power or a representation of the will of the people. My guess is Trump will win 80% of the popular vote and in return lose the electoral college because it is frankly, corrupt. Still, go vote. I do not know how the Republican party is handling the situation. In particular, i do not think they want to remain out of power and under Democrat control for another four years, so I am hoping they will atleast make sure that the electorates who go will vote Republican. |
