everal Republican lawmakers said they expect House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to step down from his leadership role after Tuesday's presidential election, The Hill reported Thursday.
Four House Republicans told the publication that Ryan would step down because he faced a difficult reelection to his position as House Speaker. To win reelection as House Speaker, Ryan would need 218 votes from his own GOP conference.
None of the lawmakers quoted by The Hill provided their names to the publication.
Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong denied the report.

"He is running,” she told the Daily News in a brief statement.
Ryan, however, has failed to garner strong support from other Republican leaders in recent days over whether he should remain the party's leader in the House.

"My respect for Paul Ryan is boundless," he told the National Journal when asked if Ryan should remain Speaker. "I'm not a member of the House Republican conference anymore. I wouldn't presume upon what the members of the conference choose."
