Find out when the moon is approaching full, and a couple of days before start watching it from when it rises, and at hourly intervals until its sets (or for as long as you can). Observe its orientation each hour, if possible use binoculars as the features will be much clearer. Do this for say five days. What you will observe is that the moon appears to rotate in a clockwise direction at a constant rate from moonrise to moonset. The moon isn't actually rotating, but because the earth is rotating, it gives the illusion that the moon is. I'm not an astronomer, I just noticed this many years ago, did the above experiment, and then found out why. |
