It's only the sixth largest economy because it is part of the USA.
On its own, it would need to allocate a great percentage of resources for defense.
Not to mention they will need massive desalinization plants once we divert the Colorado River.
And if they want to sell us that produce, they will have to pay a tariff.

Over half of registered voters in California are Republicans or Independents -- not Democrats -- though.

I wish that people would finally understand that, and quit hating the entire state. Yes, the limousine liberals that do happen to inhabit CA are particularly loud, obnoxious and overbearing, but they absolutely do not represent all of us.

And, most of us do not think we are "so great"; we're just like everyone else in every other state.
