Probably some gravity drive or something that bends space around the craft, that could create an effect of the sky "rolling up" on itself like a scroll. People in those days would have absolutely no idea what was happening and would try and describe it using references to things theyve seen in that way.

also in revelation 6, once the sky opens up, people become terrified and beg mountains to cover them from God. Probably because they will see angels in heaven right above the sky, and realize that God is real, and they are in deep trouble.
