Powerful magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes northeast of Fukushima Daiichi

The final countdown has begun.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan northeast of the Fukushima nuclear complex Saturday morning, where the devastating offshore quake of 2011 killed nearly 16,000 people and caused a meltdown of three nuclear reactors.

Friday's temblor hit at 6:42 a.m. local time Saturday (4:42 p.m. ET Friday) about 24 km east-northeast of Ishinomaki, some 122 km northeast of Fukushima Prefecture. The U.S. Geological Survey measured a depth of 44.8 km. No tsunami warnings have been issued.
