Remotely Operated Vehicle observations revealed streams of methane-rich gas bubbles coming from the crests of pingo-like-features (PLFs) – due to warm water influx. We offer a scenario of how PLFs may be growing offshore as a result of gas pressure associated with gas hydrate decomposition.
Abstract
The Arctic shelf is currently undergoing dramatic thermal changes caused by the continued warming associated with Holocene sea level rise. During this transgression, comparatively warm waters have flooded over cold permafrost areas of the Arctic Shelf. A thermal pulse of more than 10°C is still propagating down into the submerged sediment and may be decomposing gas hydrate as well as permafrost. A search for gas venting on the Arctic seafloor focused on pingo-like-features (PLFs) on the Beaufort Sea Shelf because they may be a direct consequence of gas hydrate decomposition at depth. Vibracores collected from eight PLFs had systematically elevated methane concentrations. ROV observations revealed streams of methane-rich gas bubbles coming from the crests of PLFs. We offer a scenario of how PLFs may be growing offshore as a result of gas pressure associated with gas hydrate decomposition.

Charlie Paull reported that methane gas bubbling from an underwater PLF has been sampled on the MacKenzie Mackenzie delta shelf. Charlie noted that at present these features are the only clearly documented examples of methane escaping from permafrostPLFs. PLFs are found on the MacKenzie Mackenzie delta both on land and on the shelf, and they are key features to study how methane gas escapes from gas hydrates in Arctic regions. |

Runaway global warming at work. Humans may have started the inevitable by breaking the balance and increasing the atmospheric CO2 levels by 50%, but once a climatic fluctuation starts there isn't much stopping it. Slightly warmer seas means more methane hydrate ice that's been lurking on the bottom since who knows when will melt, and release methane into the air. This is a potent greenhouse gas... |

The permafrost is melting across Siberia and Alaska. Without a doubt this will change the climate even more drastically than man-made pollution and then no-one will be able to deny it.
But the real aim of the climate change deniers was not to win the debate but to buy time for the global economy. It's likely that when everything goes down, the crash will be huge and the recession permanent. Only a few will ride out the economic cataclysm but who can survive the climate imploding too? |

Methane Catastrophes in Earth's Past . . . and Near Future?
Methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, the gas which is currently warming our globe, even though methane remains in the atmosphere for a much shorter time. If released abruptly, seafloor methane has the potential to deliver a stunning jolt of heat to the planet's already increasing temperatures. Even if released more gradually, seafloor methane will inevitably compound the problem of global warming. But abruptly or gradually, as we warm the planet by our dumping of carbon dioixde into the atmosphere, the seafloor will also warm, and its methane will inevitably be released.

The ocean will become stratified, with mixing between its surface and the deep ocean becoming increasingly restricted. If the deep ocean becomes fully anoxic (devoid of oxygen), it will also become toxic, as the remaining anaerobic organisms pump out the deadly gas hydrogen sulfide. In sufficient quantities, that gas could escape oceanic confinement to poison the atmosphere and, combining with the iron in the blood's hemoglobin, kill terrestrial organisms, including us. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 159906 1/30/2007 2:19 PM | | Re: BREAKING: Methane now bubbling from Beaufort Sea | Quote | Ok, methane equals CH4, so we have to build big fucking plants to pull the methane out of the air, and produce H as a product. Then we drive our cars on H. It's like they're bringing the hydrocarbons to us. How about putting factory/ships over the bubbles to suck them up right out of the water and process it onsite? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 107860 1/30/2007 2:20 PM | | Re: BREAKING: Methane now bubbling from Beaufort Sea | Quote | Again this proves that all emision caused by Humans from farting to driving cars to anyhting is not the real cause of earths warming up.
The sea bed is emitting Methane and the sea floor is getting warmer from beneath as all the volcanos are hot from beneath.
So in essence the bloody Illumenati governments are brain washing the sheeple to the mantara of taxation to save the planet from emmission caused by them.
One single Volcano of diginity can spew in the atmosphere and the stratosphere so much emissions and particles that the whole humanity past, present and future will not come near to.
The other part is the magnetic fields effecting the earth through the interplanetary interaction by stengthing/weakning the Mangetic sphere as well as the suns particle bombardments, etc.etc. |

It would have less impact on the climate if we could collect this methane and burn it and release the C02 - methane retains more heat than the equivalent CO2.
Methane is the major component in natural gas, so you wouldn't need to convert it first to H2, it is useful in its natural state.
There were some folks saying that methane clathrates (the stuff in question) would be a huge new source of natural gas.
Nobody has ever come up with a way to collect it. It's pretty unstable, and just starts bubbling up when you mess with it. It is presumed to be an icy slush, whose structure holds the methane physically. When you stir it up, the methane escapes. Sort of like squeezing water out of a sponge, except in this case the sponge sort of spontaneously dissolves if you mess with it.
Ships over the bubbles have problems. Specifically, when there are enough bubbles the ship sinks. You can do this demonstration in the lab. They think natural clathrate releases may have caused some unexplained ship sinkings. That might take an awful lot of bubbles, however.
I'm not saying this is unsolvable, but it is currently unsolved, and if it is happening on any sort of wide scale, we are DOOMED. |

Well, uh, ah... Ahem, what I have to say is that is a very inconvenient truth for my theories...

Global warming 'just a natural cycle'
By Charles Clover, Environment Editor
Last Updated: 2:27am GMT 19/01/2007
Global warming comes and goes in 1,500 year cycles which may have more to do with cosmic rays than fossil fuel emissions, according to a new book.
If the genuine warming now being seen is caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide, it would have started earlier, according to the book by two veteran American climate sceptics, Fred Singer and Dennis Avery.
Mr Avery, who was in London yesterday, said: “If this were a CO2 driven warming it should have started in 1940 and risen strongly from there. In fact warming started in 1850 and rose sharply until 1940 then decreased for 35 years.”
Mr Avery believes that only half the warming that has happened since 1940 - 0.2 degrees according to his measurements - can be ascribed to man made emissions. The rest he says is natural variability.
“If you factor in the warming from the cyclical trends, it is not very frightening,” he said.
The authors of Unstoppable Global Warming - Every 1,500 Years, say that history, ice core studies and stalagmites all agree on a natural cycle at roughly that interval that is superimposed on the longer, stronger ice ages and interglacial phases.
They point as evidence of this natural cycle to the “Climate Optimum” - a period of warmer and wetter weather than the present Earth’s climate, which took place 9,000 years ago to 5,000 years ago, and a cooling event 2,600 years ago.
During the Roman warming period from 200 BC to around AD 600 North Africa and the Sahara were wetter and supported crops. In more recent times they point to the Medieval warming of 900 to 1300, when Eric the Red’s descendants colonised Greenland and the Little Ice Age of 1300 to 1850 which saw the Norse dairy farmers on Greenland grow short from malnutrition and eventually die out.
Mr Avery, a former US agriculture official whose celebrated earlier book was Saving the Planet with Pesticides and Plastic: The Environmental Triumph of High Yield Farming, suggests that the natural cycle of warming and cooling may come from variations in cosmic rays which have been linked to cloud formation.
This theory was validated in a recent paper in a Royal Society journal by scientists from the Danish National Space Centre who showed that sub-atomic particles - cosmic rays from exploding stars - play a major role in making clouds. During the past century cosmic rays became scarcer as vigorous activity by the sun forced them away. So there was less cloud cover to reflect away sunlight and a warmer world, according to the Danish scientists.
The book's authors say the 60 per cent reduction in fossil fuel emissions demanded from First World countries by international scientists working for the UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) would deliver a “crippling blow” to the world economy that could be avoided without damaging the planet.
Dr Richard Betts of the Meteorological Office’s Hadley Centre for Climate Change said: “The key argument among sceptics has moved away from denying that there is man-made climate change to saying that it is weaker than mainstream science has suggested.
“It is very well understood that greenhouse gases do cause radiative forcing. The work on cosmic rays is still quite speculative. The forthcoming report by IPCC next month will be the most reviewed document in the history of science. It is the IPCC process to review all the literature with an open mind. Many sceptics are involved in the process.
“It is good to have the debate. It makes sure that the rest of us are certain about what we are doing.” |
