My Nephew (no, not my uncle) is a geologist for GNS.

He spent nearly a year in Christchurch and is now in Seddon.

We were at dinner the other night and I asked him about the earthquakes. Suddenly he was very tight lipped - which is very unlike him... Usually you ask about a rock or an earthquake and watch him get moist like a spastic's chin.

I cornered him later and he said that basically, they were all being told to keep hush, that it was highly likely there would be a much larger quake late dec/early feb, based on their models. He also said that there was serious concern over the Alpine Fault. Several faults are overdue now, so "they" were very, very worried.

I wonder if that's why our Prime Minister just resigned?

I think a lot of kiwis are scared about the alpine fault. There's a guy on weather modification watch NZ ( I think that's what it's called ) who predicted the 7.8 and he is now saying he thinks there will be one on the 13 th Dec, around about an 8.0 . East coast of the north island down into the cook straight.
