Anonymous Coward User ID: 70579162 United States 11/29/2016 07:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had mail taken out of my mailbox one day last year. I had a check in the mail, to a credit card company, for the postman to pick up. The way I noticed my mail was gone was because the flag on my mailbox was down, my mail was gone, and I found out later that the postman had not arrived yet. I went to the police. They couldn't do anything about it but told me to notify my bank. I visited the bank manager the next day. My question was: 1. What stops a person from copying the info on my checks, put their name and address on it using my routing number, or... 2. Can they phone in purchases using my bank info numbers and have those purchases mailed to their home. She said "Nothing can stop them. It can be done easily!" Sooo...when you mail a check to a business, anyone who sees that check can scam you! Six months later, my neighbor told me that somebody took their mail out of their mailbox also and did just that! We compared dates, and it probably was the same day my mail was taken! Whoever took their checks used their (neighbor's) routing number and bank info. The thief had checks printed with their (thief's) name and address on it. The thief wrote checks for thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, and it showed up on my neighbor's bank statement! Their bank reimbursed them for their loss. |

I'm a revengeful muthafucka. I would have made it a game and stalked the fuck out of them. Then, if this was a mall or whatever, find out where their car was and maybe even where they lived. Burnt the car while they were working, or burnt their house to the ground. Payback is a mutharfukin bitch! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73038345 Lol now we're talking.. Anonymous Coward User ID: 70579162 United States 11/29/2016 07:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I went to the local pool store yesterday. When I went to check out the new clerk told me that the credit card terminal was not working and that he would have to call it in for approval. Quoting: Sky Pilot Then he told me to go ahead and swipe my card, which I thought strange since it was not supposed to be working. He then asked for my card and called someplace (probably his own voice mail) and read off all my card information and said OK its approved and he asked me to sign the supposedly broken credit card terminal. The next morning I had all sorts of fraud alerts from my bank and someone had charged up over $1300 in fraudulent orders: $860 for a "designer backpack" at Nordstroms and $450 at Walmart. If a checkout clerk says they have to call it in while still using the credit card terminal, run, don't walk away. Dang...not to be rude but what the Heck were you thinking? The RED flags were right in front of you..... You're wrong! |

Please call the police and have this guy arrested, it's not too late. I have had to do it. If for no other reason, so he can't do it to others. Nice thing about credit cards you won't have to pay any of the charges. Kohl's was the only credit card that refused to refund my money. Long story but I paid the card because I got a late notice (I never pay late) so I quickly called in the payment (I always pay in full). Fuck Kohl's...moral of the story. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73467583 United States 11/29/2016 07:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You can still do what is called an off-line transaction when a credit card system cannot connect to the merchants acquirer for an online authorization. You obtain a voice auth and then run it offline which sounds like what this merchant did. Merchants pay out the rear in downgrade fees plus the adsitional cost to call for a voice auth. Your credit card issuer will handle this, I am sure you already called, you will not be liable for any of the fraud charges. It may or may not have been compromised by this merchant. There are Payment Card Industry rules that merchants have to validate in order to process payments, but if this merchant stored your card data and some hacker managed to break in and steal it, thats how compromise happens or as in the restaurant biz they xopy numbers and CVV info down and use it onlins. It is all moving to token payments soon only your isssuer will know your number, that and biometrics for validatuin insted of PIN or Signatures |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73467583 United States 11/29/2016 07:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You must not get out much. I do not know of any restaurants who don't take your card to their main swipe machine or whatever it's called. There are new systems out there that work on Wifi or wireless phone networks that can be taken right to the table for payment. Most merchants have spent big bucks upgrading for chip technology and some restaurant merchants, more likely larger national chains upgraded to these types of products. Most business owners don't want the fines, penalties and brand damage that come with fraud or databreach. If a databreach not only does the merchant have to payback the cardholders they and their merchant acquirer are hit with hefty fines on top |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 25074229 United States 11/29/2016 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Been in & out of the c.c industry for years. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16134083 This does happen if the terminal goes down they have to get it approved over the phone. They sometimes run the card through the terminal to save the info so later when they do a batch it will go through. What was done is standard procedure. It may have been a scam but doubtful. Could be a fluke someone else might have ran these charges. Get it tracked pointing the finger is not going to fix it. Anyone read this ? Hello ? A friend of mine just had two bogus charges on his checking card days apart at a Home Depot in another state nearby. After the second one they canceled his card and now has a new account number and card on the way... which he uses to pay bills at the end of the month, big mess. Didn't have any machine down scam or anything else, someone just stole his info, not that hard to do... so the guy at the pool store may very well not be the culprit. Would have to be a complete idiot to try and get away with that, like using a stolen ATM card at a gas station stupid... |
