I don't particularly believe in the devil as a person but contextually I'd surmise the answer is:

The "Devil/liveD can be analogous to the spectrum of light waves and the unseen darkness that is "Dark" to what we perceive in our visible spectrum.

My mother in law wears red.

I would think red is associated with blood and something being red-hot/flames. So by extension, it could also be associated with hate, anger, violence, murder, hell, passion (bad, overly passionate). Red is a strong, aggressive, even maybe threatening color.

It's actually an interesting question. To really find out, you'd have to do some research and figure out when people started depicting the devil as we tend to think of him today (horned, hoofed, tail, red, etc.). I think it goes back pretty far, although I didn't study much art history prior to 19th century, so I don't know off the top of my head. But it either came from visual art or from literature.

Maybe it goes back to the era when people thought of things in terms of the four humors: phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine and melancholic.
