Loyalton, California's pension default is a wake up call
Sick … a punch in the stomach. That’s how public retirees in Loyalton, California, are taking news that their town defaulted on its pension payments, resulting in the possibility of their retirement benefits being cut by as much as 60 percent, the majority of their hard-earned livelihood.

Pension debt is not a new story — in fact, most of the country’s public pensions are significantly underfunded (state and local pensions across the U.S. have an estimated $5 trillion less than needed to cover promised benefits). But this time the largest pension plan in the nation, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), has thrown public employees overboard. And that has government workers and retirees across the country asking, could this happen to me? The answer is yes! If your city runs out of money and your pension plan is not fully funded, you will lose. The only question is how much.

Loyalton withdrew from CalPERS in 2013, upon the retirement of its last guaranteed pensioner. For council members, it just made sense — after all, the town had been fully paying its required annual contributions all along.

But what it didn’t count on was the $1.6 million termination fee demanded by CalPERS to cover unfunded liabilities which CalPERS has allowed to grow for the last 17 years. The fee amounts to a whopping $320,000 per each of Loyalton’s five retirees, an amount that is impossible for the town to pay. And now CalPERS has put the retirees on notice that their monthly checks will be cut.

Pinned this because we're going to see a lot more public sector retirees experiencing a large portion of their benefits being cut. In Detroit, where I believe there was a Supreme Court challenge against cutting public sector benefits and they lost, people who were retired for a couple of years found themselves looking for work in order to survive.

The Ohio Teacher's Union heavily invested their retirement money into American Airlines which was working great until American Airlines unexpectedly declared bankruptcy.

I don't know who oversees public union investment portfolios but this is something the average union worker is going to have to investigate for themselves to secure their retirement.

My mother lost her insurance with Obozocare. She paid into that for YEARS for retirement and poof, it's gone. What she has now is not half as good as what she lost. She also gets a check from the company that my step-father worked for over 35 years. I personally don't think that's sustainable either. This company takes care of retirees AND the widows of as well as still paying wages and benefits for all the current employees. She quit working as a nurse the minute she started getting it (in her 50s) and never worked again. THAT mentality is why we have all these problems with it now. The goal should be to keep going as long as you can WITH NO PENALTIES (such as cuts if you DO WORK) on what you HAVE COMING and not have the finish line as a permanent check at a certain point.

In the case of the TARP distribution during the Detroit automaker bailout, the UAW retirement fund got a piece of that pie, as did the UAW in general.

How that was dispersed among individual employees and retirees was a detail I could not find.

Its all in the fine print.

Public sector unions are just another form of legal theft.

Taxpayers are stolen from to support bloated public servant salaries and those same pensions.

That pension money goes to fund dodgy investments by companies (read up on CALpers and Enron lol).

The pensions then go under and there are demands for the taxpayer who was already stolen from once to bail them out.

You need to understand what the Communists(Democrats)understood from the implementation of the Social Security system that it would collapse, and that the promise to Union / Government workers of giant pensions would collapse.

Communism has always been a global internationalist scheme and its goal is the collapse of nations.

Democrats in the Senate on Thursday held a recess hearing covering a taxpayer bailout of union pensions and a plan to seize private 401(k) plans to more “fairly” distribute taxpayer-funded pensions to everyone.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee heard from hand-picked witnesses advocating the infamous “Guaranteed Retirement Account” (GRA) authored by Theresa Guilarducci....

the GRA system government would seize private 401(k) accounts, setting up an additional 5% mandatory payroll tax to dole out a “fair” pension to everyone using that confiscated money coupled with the mandated contributions. This would, of course, be a sister government ponzi scheme working in tandem with Social Security, the primary purpose being to give big government politicians additional taxpayer funds to raid to pay for their out-of-control spending.

[link to www.shtfplan.com]

They will wait another 20-30 years to do this, but no doubt, this is part of their long term plan, and always has been.
