Why until the mid 90's did people think smoking indoors was acceptible?

Smoking was a con to begin with and was finally exposed.

Personally as a smoker, I think it's a good thing and not right how smokers could smoke around even children. If smokers want to risk their own health, fine. But not that of others. Also, proud that it started here in Ireland.

Have to jump back ...to the time when a house had a specific room for smoking...only men and whores smoked...then during WWII...women went to work... Movie stars were admired and imitated...smoking became fashion...the rest is history

In the 60s it was rare to be a non-smoker too.

Don't forget when there was smoking on airplanes.

I smoke inside my own house and I allways will! I love to smoke and I dont get why some people dont do it... maybe they are afraid they will get sick... cowards!!!

Because generations grew up that way and so it was normal to us. When doctors started telling us our kids were getting sick with a lot of colds due to smoking in the house we thought they were absolutely off their rocker.

Then when we stopped all smoking in the house my son's illnesses (ear infection etc.) went down by probably 60-70%. Then we noticed the smell. You don't notice the smell if you grow up with it. You only notice the smell when it's not there and then you smoke then you really notice it.

If it's my house, I'll smoke anywhere I damn well please. If I smoked, that is.

We could smoke in classes at the university..in the 60's and early 70's. Everybody smoked at work. At the bar. At the restaurant. Everywhere. Over half the people smoked.

My father once told me that a woman that Smoked would do Anything.

Before that, there was a flip-open ashtray in every armrest throughout the plane and people could smoke wherever they wanted to. People smoked on NYC buses, subways and while shopping in department stores, freely. I remember people smoking while riding the escalators in stores. Times sure have changed.

And still is!

That's just your opinion, many people feel differently about it and the smell.

Personally I find colognes and perfumes offensive and shouldn't be used indoors!!!!!!!

The main thing that caused smoking indoors to be outlawed was first of all, the scientific study about the harm of second-hand smoke, and second, the lawsuits began. Employees who got emphysema, lung cancer, COPD, etc. began to sue their employer, for forcing them to work in smoke filled rooms that caused their illness. Once the lawsuits or threats of lawsuits started in the late 80's, that's when employers began making rules about not smoking at work.

Restaurants and theaters and hospitals then followed, not for the health of their customers or patients, but to avoid lawsuits from employees who had to work around the smoking patrons. That's what it was all about in the late 80's and early 90's, the scientific health threat from second hand smoke and the resulting lawsuits that would inevitably come from people forced to breathe second hand smoke on the job.

Smoking was a cultural norm from a very long time until not so long ago.

When they kicked it out of public buildings...ok, I get it.

Yea- they flick their ashes out the window, and TOSS their Cigarette Butt on the streets as they drive.
If I have my windows open, or its a nice enough day to drive my Convertible, I have to hope I'm not stuck at a Red light downwind from a smoker. (that happens ALOT)
Also- I have to worry a burning cigarette butt that gets tossed doesn't wind up in my car!
